Wheel well flaps
#13
Received the replacement splash shields late on 4/30. Opened box on 5/1 to find that for some reason I was sent three splash shields, two lefts, one right. Guess someone messed-up.
Anyways did a quick comparison to what's left of the old, original shields and they appear to be exactly the same. Going to install them onto the inner fenders today.

Most cars seems to have these splash shields behind the wheels inside the fender well... my husbands were all broken out, but they seem to be attached inside the engine compartment side rather than in the wheel well. How the heck are we supposed to install new ones without removing half the engine??? I am guessing they were broken out by a mechanic who was trying to work on the car and as you all said, they were in bad shape. We have a V6 2 door 2002 Chevy Blazer... any tips??

It seems over the years I have seen GM attach them in several ways. Sometimes they are the plastic 'Christmas trees' which are fragile and break easily. I think that is what some of the above are calling 'push pins'. The after market ones are even more fragile than the original GM pins. Then some have been stapled to the metal part of the inner fender. I would like to use zinc or stainless steel bolts, nuts and washers. They would be easy to remove and replace after a no. three sparkplug swap adventure for example. Plus these bolts would be less likely to tear the rubber flaps.

I hear what you are saying Jim....I used the plastic fasteners, some original, some new. These things are normally a one time use as like you wrote, they break...they are supposed to break so you can remove them. They usually only break when removing them, have not had one break just sitting there.
Getting a bolt, nut, washer in there place would really not hold much better and would require two people to remove, unless you have really, really long arms...LOL....
I doubt that I ever have to replace the splash shield again.

I bought a set of those flaps this summer but haven't put them in yet. I ordered them from one of the GM online parts sites - GMpartsDirect I think (?). Compared to the hard, thick, stiff ones my '99 LT came with, these replacements are thinner and VERY flexible, and both came with new push pins installed in the holes. I've been dragging my feet installing them because I thought you had to completely remove the inner fender well - the flaps mount to the inside surface - but someone in this thread said you only need to "loosen" it. I wish there was more details about that. I'm not too anxious to wrestle with a big ungainly piece of sheet metal.

IDK if I'll get the views in this thread but what do people do for front splash protection. I see there should be a splash guard covering oil filter and stuff but it's not available that I can see. I saw there may be aluminum skid shields but I'm not off-roading and that would be $$.
