Default Won't shift into second... Rebuild after only 42k???

My trans was last rebuilt at 200k miles, it has 242k now and it doesn't seem to be engaging second gear properly. When I accelerate from a stop 1st gear revs up and it skips second and goes to third. But when I decelerate it will go from third into second and drive normally. When I put the gear manually into 2 it stays in first. 1,3, Overdrive, and reverse work perfectly and there are no rpm wiggles or slips.

I took it AAMCO and they said it needs a rebuild, but at only 42k miles since my last I don't think it should be time for another already. Any ideas?

Is the check engine light on? Have you retrieved the codes? Even if the light is off, there might be something in the pending file... worth a try. Might be something as simple as a bad 1-2 shift solenoid, or a sticking 1-2 shift valve in the valve body. The solenoid and the valve body can be serviced without removing the transmission.

No active or pending trouble codes... Would a bad valve body or solenoid trip one?

The valve body would not, the solenoid would, but only if it has an electrical problem, (open or short to ground).

Are the two solenoids the same so that they could be swapped and to see if the problem changes?

Also could just be a pinched wire to the 1-2 solenoid, or connector is loose.

Guess you could drop the trans pan and take a look. Would just cost you a pan gasket and perhaps some fluid.

1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shift solenoids are all the same, and they're all right next to each other on the valve body. TCC solenoid is next to the shift solenoids, but it is noticeably different in appearance. Might be worth looking for a problem with the wiring, and swap the shift solenoids. When the solenoids are out, you can feel if the spool valves move freely too.
