Default Worse after fix

So I have seen the articles for low speed ABS activation and the Tech. Bulletin. Just looking for a thought or 2 here. My ABS light would come on intermittently but the brakes still worked fine so I got 2 new sensors to get rid of the warning light, (sensors were the first thing on the code reader, mentioned specifically drivers side), replaced them both and replaced the front brake pads at the same time. I did not notice shims on either side for the sensors. So now I get the low speed ABS activation where I did not before. However, no light comes on. Then, intermittently, the ABS light comes on and the ABS does not activate and the brakes work fine. Scratching my head on this one. The only thing I noticed is some grease and dirt on the drivers sensor when I pulled it out. Should all that be squeaky clean where the reluctor is? Is the hub seal (or whatever) effed up? Is that maybe what is preventing the sensor to be read? I did not do a DVM millivolt test as of yet as it's just too hot here in NorCal at the moment. Any constructive thoughts are welcome.
Thanks.

2001 ZR2 with 2003 motor all smog legal.

Generally, you just replace the entire wheel bearing with the sensor.
