Default 1999+ AHL disable - DISCUSSION THREAD

This is how to disable automatic headlights on 1999 and up models.

First go to RadioShack and get a pack of 2.2k Ohm 1/2 watt resistors, they come in a 5 pack for a dollar.

Then take out your passenger side dash speaker cover by removing the two screws holding it in.

There is a plug that goes into the light sensor, disconnect that.

Take out a resistor and bend it into a U-shape, then put it into the plug.

Tape it up so the resistor stays secure in the plug.

Tuck the resistor into the hole to get it out of the way.

After that re-install the speaker cover and tada, no more auto headlights

Good write up! Our radio shack here doesn't have just 2.2k ohm and the 100 pack assorted didn't either. I had to buy 5 off ebay for like 2 bucks. I believe is is the same for pre-99 you just use a 680 ohm resistor.

Thanks, and yeah I knew it was the same process I just wasn't sure of what kind of resistor was needed.

I believe this is also the same for 1998 trucks. I remember purchasing 1.6kOhm and 2.2kOhm but I can't remember what I ended up using. I'll go check the bands on it and see what I used.

hmm you know what i wana do if i want to shut off the automatic lights? push the dome over ride button four times. Just me though :P Not trying to say it was a bad idea but i just do that :P it would be annoying to have to do it every time though! nice write up!

it's actually a .25 watt, 1000 (1K) ohm resistor.

i know 'cause my Blazer is a '98, and i have the other 3 (see wrong rated) resistors still sitting in the bag beside my computer-with a nice note inside for the proper rating required for my truck.

besides the extreme annoyance of doing that every single time, it actually doesn't work on most trucks.

hmmmm...........that would make for an intersting poll. 'cause it seems every time someone mntions doing that trick, 5 other owners fire back that it doesn't work on their rig.

nah, it has nothing to do with being a Canadian export.

and that was my biggest issue when i installed all of my HID's. i've always had a bad habbit of hitting the lights as i crank the key, but that was causing my lfet LB to not energize the odd time. took a little bit, but it's now habbit.

i found a WAY easier way to do this, on my truck anyhow.
i was going over a bump and went for the fog light switch at the same time, and i happen to hit the dome cancel switch... four times in a row.

this disabled the auto headlamps and left me in the dark and i almost crashed.

press the dome light cancel switch four more times to re engage the auto lamps.

i drive a 2000 blazer LS 2 dr 4x4. test this out and let me know if it works for you

did you read everything that's been posted in just this thread?

pointing out Kai's post @ #5, and what i adressed in the post right above your post.

you need to do that every single time.

besides, it took me all of 60 seconds to disable them FOREVER!

remove 2 screws. pull up speaker grill & unplug sensor. install resistor & tape it up. reinstall speaker grill. put 2 screws back in.

enjoy for the rest of your trucks life!
