Default FluX On: Power Windows - Discussion

This information is presented as a how to in repairing a stuck power window motor in a Generation 2B Blazer and similar S-10 pickups, Part numbers specified are for a 1999 Blazer ZR2. Procedure is for drivers door with window jammed in half way position.

With the window stuck and a door open press the up or down button. If the interior lights noticeably dim the motor is jammed which is what this covers. If the lights remain unchanged, it could be a bad fuse, switch or harness. Both passenger and drivers side need to be checked in that case because of the switches being wired together.

Danger: The window regulator presents a clear and present danger to persons attempting repair. This spring loaded death trap easily rivals anything 'Jigsaw' could build. The motor should not be removed while the regulator is still in the car, but it may be nessacary, as it was for me if you can not disengage the regulator from the window. Take all nessacary precautions and use the buddy system.

Parts required:
Left Window Lift Motor, Cardone 82130 or 42130 ($69 New, $51 Rebuilt)
Or Right Window Lift Motor, Cardone 82131 or 42131 ($69 New, $58 Rebuilt)
Some grease

Tools required:
3/8" Drive Drill with assorted bits, 1/8", 3/16" and 3/8"
1/4" Ratchet with extension
12mm socket
7mm deepwell socket
#2 Phillps Screwdriver
Door trim removal tool or large straight screwdriver
Stubby straight screwdriver
Butter knife
Volt meter
Duct tape
Shop Vac.

The motor will come with the nessacary rivit replacement hardware.

Using the phillips screw driver, remove the plate behind the door opening latch. Swing the latch to the open position to gain access to the screw.

Remove switch control panel by pulling up on the edge closest to the dash board. Using flat blade screw driver disengage lock tabs and pull out electrical connectors. Inspect for fraying, discoloration or burnt wires.

Under the arm rest pull handle there are 2, 7mm screws in deeply recessed pockets, remove them with the ratchet and deep well socket.

With the door trim removal tool or large straight screw driver, pry door trim panel away from the door. Start from the bottom and pry towards the interior of the car. Be sure to get all of the retaining clips so no damage occurs during removal. With the clips disengaged, tilt panel up and out of door.

Remove black water sheild with butter knife. Place knife around seams and pull. The lower corner by the speaker may have to be cut to remove shield from door panel.

Connect the control panel back to the wire harness. Disconnect electrical connector to the window motor and with a volt meter verify voltage while running switch up and down. Note that the polarity reverses in the opposite direction. With power verified to the motor procede to removal of motor, if no voltage was present you will have to trouble shoot the electrical system.

Because the window is stuck in the half way position the only way to get it up right is to remove the motor. Do this by drilling the heads of the rivits off the motor with the 3/8" bit. Use the phillips screwdriver as a punch with the handle of the straight to gently tap the rivits free from the motor housing. Support the window and remove the motor.

With the motor out of the regulator pull the window into the upright position and secure there with lots of duct tape. Stick butter knife in slot and gear teeth of window regulator to jam spring loaded death trap.

Drill the heads off of the rivits holding the regulator to the door and punch the rivit bodies out of the door panel. Using the shop vac, suck out the metal shrapnel from the inner door panel via the lower access port.

Remove the butter knife and pull regulator out enough to allow it to turn 90 degrees counter clockwise. Regulator arm with teeth will come out of the tracks, this allows the motor rivits to be replaced. Have a helper assist. At this point one of the holes should be close on the bottom, stick the phillips screwdriver through the regulator into the door panel. Remove the remaining motor mount rivits and place the provided motor screws into the rivit holes, The screws with the flat heads need to go into the holes that are closest to the spring. Place the nuts temporarily so the screws so they not bind with the regulator arm.

With a helper remove the screwdriver and rotate back 90 degrees clockwise. Make sure the regulators main gear finds its way back into the track. Jam the screw driver back in a hole and the butter knife in the slot between the gear and window regultor. Use the ratchet and the stubby straight and start installing the replacement screws to secure the regulator back to the door frame.

Remove the duct tape while supporting the window and run the window to the lowered postion. Remove the temporary bolts from the motor screws and glob some grease on the regulator and replacement motors teeth.

Secure the motor into the regulator. Move the window up or down slightly until the teeth mesh. Secure the nuts to the bolts. These are lock nuts so you can usually get way without a tool on the other side, just go real slow. Attach electrical connector to the motor and verify opperation up and down a few times to coat the grease.

Remove the control panel and reassemble door panel in the reverse order taken appart.
