I have an aftermarket stereo and regularly plug my phone in to stream music instead of using CDs. In the past, I had an RCA to 3.5mm cable plugged in to the back of the stereo and coming out of the ashtray and just laying on the floor by the passengers feet. It worked well but was ugly as sin. So I decided to modify things a bit and mounted a plug right under the stereo.
I bought a headphone jack from Radio Shack:
Cut up the cable and soldered the wires to the jack: (awful job on this one, I had to do this two more times until I got it right)
So it looks like this now:
Some nice clean finished installed pics:
And, a closeup:
All in all, it took 2 days because I'm awful at soldering, and cost 10 bucks. Cheap and easy FTW!

And take it from a guy with terrible case of ten thumbs.. key to good soldering, like welding, is practice.. and if it still doesnt seem right, there's plenty of 'how-to' on the web.
Now my hands tend to shake, so my days of 50 join component kit solderig are over.. dammit!

That's pretty slick looking, good job!
to bad my factory radio don't have a port like that. it would look a lot nicer that the cassette adapter thing I am using now with wire hanging out of the tape deck down front of the radio and the mp3 player laying in the seat.

Great thinking on here.
I know on Fords, there's an easy workaround for most installations, recess the aftermarket. get a base radio or radio/tape faceplate and either velcro it or hinge-rig so it drops down.
Still I would rather not screw with the aftermarket in the first place.
