there really isn't a point in fusing the wire going to your battery to your alt. It doesn't hurt anything, but it's not something you need.

Why fuse a wire at all then? Fact of the matter is, if these wires get pinched or disconnected and contact ground, a fuse could save your truck from a fire. I have seen many people who thought they knew better left with nothing after an engine fire. There is a reason fuses are made in those large sizes. You should fuse close to the battery on the positive wire.

Does the stock alternator to battery wire have a fuse? No, not putting on on a upgraded wire really isn't any different.

I'm not saying its a bad idea, it just isn't something that's 'needed' as much as a power wire on the amp.

Was the question asked of the alternator wire specifically? There really needs to be some attention to specifics when making statements. That is the point I am covering here.

The question was asked about which style fuse to get and what amperage. The response was that the fuse is pointless. See the rub?

Stock wiring has fuses. Every vehicle has a large fuse in the main power wire. It might not have one on the alternator wire, but that is vehicle dependent. Any wire that comes off of the battery positive post has the ability to be shorted to ground, would you agree? Average CCA of the batteries used in these trucks is in the neighborhood of 500A. That is one heck of an arc if dead shorted to ground.

Cause if the wire does get pinched or cut both ends will still be hot. One from the battery and the other from the alt. Unless it just so happens to get pinched or cut between the fuse block and alt and the motor dies. The wire will still be hot just covered by the fuse block. Also If you've responded to many crashed by the time a wire that is that short and right beside the battery gets cut normally the motor has been killed or locked up and the battery is toast anyways.

Its pointless but if it helps you sleep better at night by all means please run one. There are tons of cars and trucks out there that don't have them, never had them, and prolly won't. None of the first gens we have around here had a fused alt waire from the factory. One is a 87 blazer, 2 93 trucks, and a 92 truck. The only one that doesn't have the factory wiring is my 87 cause I've done the big 3 on it (with no fuse).

You missed the point! Your statement is only good for the alternator wire. It was a false statement without clarification. You are getting too hung up on the question asked by one person in this thread and applying it across the board to every other question.

Fuses are used to protect components. Whether that component is an amplifier, control module, or battery. Why else would every vehicle made have a maxi fuse or fusible link? They might not have them on the alternator wire, but they sure do have them on the main power wire.

Well please excuse me, the thread was about the big 3, I'm only talking about the one hot wire in the big three. Sorry I'm not with you on other subjects. You seem to be the only one talking about other electrical items. Nobody said a fuse was pointless for other items just in the case of a big 3 upgrade it is in the one wire.

the point is fusing the hot alternator wire is worthless. If it breaks, it's gonna be hot on either end still. It's easier to just run a straight wire. a fuse is not going to do any good unless you fuse it right at the alternator, and right at the battery, and that's a waste of fuses and money IMO.
