it will cut off certain frequencies from your speakers. No, with a mostly stock system, you don't really need one.

i have one b/c it allows you to tune your front & rear speakers and ur subs all diffenently and at different frequencies like hillbilly said.

I use a PPI FRX-456 crossover. ill post pic of it if you want
