Im lookin to spend around $60 on some nice door speakers.

Looking for good treble and just nice sounding speakers that wont distort at high volumes.

I saw some kickers that looked nice for about $50-60.... Any good?

I also heard to go with 3 way speakers.

Kicker normally makes some very nice products. So I would assume they would be pretty nice.

First of all, if all you're looking for is an improvement in sound over the stock speakers, just about any aftermarket set would do that. The Kicker's are a decent way to go for certain. However, distortion is much more a result of the device powering the speakers than any shortcoming of the speakers themselves. I would suggest that if you truly want to have clean, distortion free music from your speakers that you buy a small amp to run them with. A HU internal amp is simply not capable of producing any great power output that is clean and distortion free. The Kenwood in my Jimmy is one of the better HU internal amps I've had the pleasure of using, it still surprises me sometimes, but it will NEVER hold a candle to what my SAX-125.2 will do for my components. I've got a couple of links here for a couple of amps that aren't very expensive and that will make a fantastic difference in the sound you hear from whichever new set of speakers you choose and a few other decent choices for speakers as well. You'll also notice they're all 2-way sets. More isn't better when it comes to the number of speakers, it can make the sound stage a mess. Also, you'll NEVER be able to hear ANY distinction in a speaker set between whatever mids/tweets/supertweets a manufacturer may use on a 3 or 4 way coaxial speaker. Without getting into more expensive sets those little speakers in the center are cheap little drivers with very cheap devices used as crossovers and in no way do enough to shape the signals given to those little drivers to make any difference in the sound they produce from one to the other even IF the drivers themselves were capable of playing anything different from one to the next. Three and four way sets are simply not worth messing with JUST to say you have a three or four way set.

i agree there is no need to get 3 way speakers especially if you are going to amplify them. they will sound much better amplified, because your head unit cant put out more then like 25 watts rms. spend a lil more now and you be happy you did.

Hey alton, nice post! I am also looking at upgrading and just today installed my xmas presents- Kenwood kdc-hd545u and some polk audios in the front doors. I am pleased with the improvement- SO NOW I NEED MORE.
I have a few dumb questons- If I add an amp and some more upgraded speaks, where do you drop in the amp? behind the dash/existing radio?
Do I use the existing wiring to speaks?
And Matt, Can you fit the kickers in the doors?, they fit? or is there some modification going to be happening? uh, cvt65s?
I told you they were dumb questions....

They're not dumb questions at all.

First of all, The amp will need to be installed where it can breathe. Most are too big to fit behind the dash and with these trucks most of us have to get a little creative to find a place to mount them. As far as the wires go, it's generally the best practice to run new ones, but it can be difficult for beginners to do. So yes, you can disconnect the speaker wires from the HU and connect them to the amp to save a little trouble.

When it comes to speakers that don't quite fit, you can remove the factory plastic mounting rings and make some out of MDF or high ply count plywood to make baffles to mount the speakers into and bolt them to the doors in place of the factory plastic. I'll have a good step by step on that in my build log soon.

I would probably recommend the Kickers over the Alpines believe it or not. The Alpines have a more relaxed sound to them and I would imagine you'd be trying to get more from them than they can deliver. Overall I usually recommend component sets to people like what blazinloud recommended. However, they do take a little more skill to install properly and I felt you're probably really only looking for some good replacements to the factory speakers at this point. The Kickers do sound pretty good with decent bass response, mild midrange and a tweeter that can really get the highs across without getting harsh. I will reiterate the importance of the amp as well. To truly get good sound without distortion at higher volume levels an amp will make the best of them.
