HD is public broadcast stuff, basically the same radio you hear now rebroadcast in higher quality, you'll still get commericials, the only advantage is you get clearer music and a little better range. I'd look into the specs of the reciever though my alpine headunit says HD compatable but to recieve HD signals you have to purchase a HD reciever that connects to the HU at a cost of $250 or so. For that price you could pay for a satellite reciever and a years subscription and get more channels and no commercials. On the other hand if you plan on keeping the system for several years the operating cost of HD is lower overall because you don't have the monthly fee, you just have to put up with commercials.
I'm not so worried about the commercials. It's more so the principle of the thing. If I'm going to pay a monthly fee, I don't want to hear commercials. So I may lean towards Sirius instead of XM. Correct me if I am mistaken, but don't you have to buy a seperate ant or something for the satellite radio as well? That's the impression I get but I may be wrong...

Sirius is the best. My mom had it in her last car, and she loved it. She has free xm in her current car, and is now willing to pay for sirius because it is better. commercial free, etc. My dad also has it, and thats all he listens too. Sirius is doing just fine. their stock maybe in the ****box, but they have never really been above 6 bucks a share. I like the music stations much better on sirius, and i have never heard a commercial. As far as the HD goes, it's basically just what you have now, only clearer, and if you are willing to pay ~250 for it, then fine, but i know i would personnaly rather have the sirius. Alpine makes good decks. i'm gettting the cda-9856 within the next month. I won't be getting any radio mods though, because i only ever listen to cd's, and then i will be able to listen to my ipod on there, so that'll be even better. Sirius is the way to go

Yeah, both satellite and HD need a seperate antenna/reciever the difference is that the equipement for satellite is cheaper, but you have a monthly fee... I pay a lot for satellite TV and I still get commercials, if I subscribed to premium channels I'd expect a lot less commercials on those channels but still if there weren't commercials on the TV I doubt any of us could afford to watch TV at all.

If I were to upgrade my radio to recieve additional signals I'd probabally go with satellite simply because I can listen to the same station no matter where I drive. About the only time I drive is when we are going to visit my grandmother or parents 3 hours away (my commute to work is about 5 minutes) In 3 hours, passing through 3 major metropolitan areas, I have to change the radio station a minimum of 3 times to keep a signal. Even with HD I'm pretty sure I'd have to change the station at least twice. On the other hand I can buy a lot of used CDs off Amazon or eBay or download MP3s for the $100 it would cost to install a satellite reciever and another stack of music for the cost of a monthly fee. With MP3 players finding a track is no more difficult than scanning radio stations.

It sounds like I'm leaning toward Sirius. I've never been real partial to any of the XM channels that I have heard so I figure that Sirius cant be a step down. Plus Howard Stern is on there. At this point its looking like the Alpine 9853 instead of the 57. I'll just have to get the ipod adaptor & the Sirius adaptor.

And yes, both XM and Sirius stock are both crap at this point in time...

I have Sirius and I wouldnt trade it for anything. I had XM and hated it. Its going downhill and Sirius has better stations in my opinion.
