Hi all...before Christmas, I ordered (new on Ebay)some nice Phoenix Gold 4x6's to replace my Polk's in the dash. I was trying to install them today, and they are too small! The frame is barely bigger than the cut out, and the mounting brackets are single tabs. You all know how hard it is to work in that small space between the dash and the windshield. Returning them will be a big pain in the butt, and cost more money.

So I'm thinking...perhaps I can put them somewhere else...like in that empty square directly above the 6.5's.

*FYI, these will be powered...if that matters.

go to your local install shop and get a piece of abs plastic and make mounting brackets for them. probably 5 or 10 bucks a sheet. that is what I would do!

 

or you could get creative with some nuts and large washers. That in very few words is what I did when I found some 4x6 speakers that turned out to be europen mount style for cheap at a local audio store sale. I would say you could go with what hillbillyinohio said, that should work too.

 

I have various thicknesses of sheet plastc, and that would work...but I'm starting to really consider the door idea...but I don't know what that'll do to my imaging...if ya'll even call it that anymore. Later, I'd like to yank the back seats out, and build a box into the foot wells, and be able to cover it back over. I think my amps will get too hot though...

I have too much I want to do to a Blazer with 175K miles...

 

***OK...my wife wanted me to update this: SHE bought me the 4x6's, a new Kenwood 4-3-2 (800W), and 2 new 1000W Kenwood subs (10's).

I'll never be into the competition set ups, but I like a nice clean sounding system.

*The subs are powered off a 1000W mono Kenwood (I like Kenwood), the new 4x6's will run off 2 channels of the new amp, and my MB Quart 6.5 mid-bass in the door off the other 2 channels...if I can get enough juice to them; they're hungry little animals.

One more thing: the new subs are single voice coil, 4ohm, 1000W, running off the 1000W mono amp as mentioned. What would be the best way to wire them? I installed them earlier, and they seemsomewhat underpowered...but the sound is much cleaner. I've been out of the 'loop' forover a decade now, so I've forgotten everything but the basics!

OK...I'll post up the exact model of the amp tomorrow if need be (it's only a few years old), but I think we can get it figured out otherwise. The subs are Kenwood KFC2511's, which rate 50-300 watts RMS, 1000w peak. I have them wired as shown below, which should drop me to 2 ohms @ up to 500W per sub...is that right? I had an older set of Kenwood subs in before that rated 300W, and had the amp turned half way down. Even with the power all the way up on the xover, These new subs don't seem to be getting enough power without hitting the bass boost on the sub, and the xover...which I don't want to have to do...and it sounds like crap anyway.

I actually need to take a picture of the side of the amp, because I can't remember what any of the adjustments do. Regardless, it's not a competition amp, or speakers, so I should still be getting better sound than what I had with the 8 year old subs.
