Want to upgrade your factory radio and/or your speakers? Here is all the info that you will need. You will need certain parts to install your new radio. The parts are: antenna adaptor only 1989 to 2005), a wiring harness, and a dash kit. The part numbers for these are as follows. *(M) stands for Metra Parts. If you have a 1st Generation S-10 (1982-1993)* you have 4x6 plates in the dash, and 4X10's in the side panels, or in the rear pillar. The wiring harness to add an aftermarket radio is 70-1677-1 (Metra) and GM01B (Scosche). The dash kit is 99-4544 (M), and Gm1500B (S) *Antenna adaptor is 40GM-10 (only for Years 1989-1993) If you have a 1st Generation S-10 Blazer (1982-1994)*, you have 4x6 plates in dash, and 6x9's in rear on side panel (4-doors will have 6 1/2's in rear doors instead of 6x9's) The wiring harness is 70-1677-1 (M) and GM01B (S) The dash kit is 99-4544(M) and GM1500B (S) *Antenna adaptor is 40GM-10 (only for Years 1989-1994) If you have a 2nd Generation S-10 (1994- 2003)* you have 4x6’s in the dash, 6 ½’s in the doors, and 4x6’s in the rear panel. Some models will not have an actual 4x6 in the dash, rather either a blank plate or a 1” tweeter in a 4x6 plate. The wiring harness for 1994-2001 is 70-1858 (M) and GM02B (S) The dash kit for 1994-1997 is 99-3043 / 99-3044 (M) and GM1515 (S) The dash kit for 1998-2001 is 99-3300 (M) and GM1588B (S) The wiring harness for 2002-2003 is 70-2003 (M) and GM05B (S) The dash kit for 2002-2003 is 99-2003 / 99-2001 / 99-3301 (M) and GM1583B (S) * Antenna adaptor is 40GM-10 (needed on all S-Series Trucks from 1994-up) If you have a 2nd Generation S-10 Blazer / Blazer (1995-2005)* you have 4x6’s in the dash, 6 ½’s in doors and 6x9’s in rear side panel. RE: Stereo Wiring and Install Parts

Is this wiring the same for a 2000 chevy ZR2 blazer? I have an aftermarket deck that I am trying to install but I can not figure out where the accessory wire goes? (to what color) I have 2 skinny dark blue 1 skinny green and a thick light blue and a thick brown. what do those get connected to? Please help me!!!

hillbillyinOhio 06-16-2007 09:48 PM

RE: Stereo Wiring and Install Parts

that is the exact same wiring for your truck

here are the wiring codes for the after market harness
12v constant is Orange - connect to yellow wire on radio
12v switched is yellow(larger wire) - connect to red wire on radio
ground is black, connect to black on radio
ignore the grey and brown, for must and illumination. don't worry about them

Speakers are
Left Front
Tan is positive - connect to solid gray on radio
Grey is negative - connect to gray with black tracer on radio

Rt Front
Lt Green is Positive - connect to solid white on radio
Dk Green is Negative - connect to white with black tracer on radio

Left Rear
Brown is positive - connect to solid green on radio
Yellow(smaller wire) is Negative - connect to green with black tracer on radio

Rt Rear
Positive is Dk. Blue - connect to solid purple wire on radio
Negative is Lt. Blue - connect to purple with black tracer on radio

Circuitcity installed teh amp control cable to the dark green wire.. is this wrong and could this be a reason my amp is not turning on?

hillbillyinOhio 01-22-2008 12:27 PM

RE: Stereo Wiring and Install Parts

are you referring to the remote lead to tell the amp to turn on?? if you have a factory radio, should be connected to the larger yellow wire

im getting new speakers but is it necessary to replace my indash tweeters?

mdehoogh 01-28-2008 12:05 PM

RE: Stereo Wiring and Install Parts

you dont need to replace them unless you want to. it would be best to get a good set of component speakers and run the tweeter up to the dash. most speakers you see at walmart/circuitcity/bestbuy...etc.etc... are coaxial speakers that have a larger speaker and a built-in tweeter on top of that. some speakers take it to the extreme and have two or even three tweeters. i have 3way speakers in my front doors and 2way speakers in my rear doors. i have a 4x6 component speaker in the front dash.

i will probably end up getting new (component) front speakers within the next few months. i dont know how long the 3way pioneer speakers can take a 70w beating...

bobditts is correct, im not sure if 3way is the correct term but i was referring to the 3way coaxial speakers that have 2 tweeters built in... triaxial? lol

You seem to know a bit about wiring. Wondering if you could answera few questions? Got a 97 s-10 blazer. Im installing a in dash dvd/cd player. If it helpsthe brandisa VP3 and model is VRVD630. Got everything hooked up and running besides the picture on the screen. It wont allow picture because I need to connect a wire to the parking break that disables the picture whenever the vehicle is not in park. Where is that wires closest point to the dvd player and what color would it be?

RE: Stereo Wiring and Install Parts

What is the Delco Bose system in my 01 Jimmy like? It's hard to find information on it without paying. For instance, it has 6 speakers, but how is everything wired up under the dash? The display, controller, and CD player (head unit?) are on the dash but where are the amps? I've heard that each speaker has its own amp.

I want to keep the original system but add a subwoofer and amp. Wondering what is the best way to achieve this. Perhaps finding the high level wires (going to the speakers) and splicing in a high to low level converter to send a signal to the sub amp. Where is the harness then, close to the speaker amps, I suppose? The rear speakers also don't seem to have any bass, wouldn't want to hook the converter up the these speakers probably. Is there a way I can get a low level signal, perhaps between the head unit and the amps? I heard that the Delco Bose system doesn't have low level RCA outputs.

Maybe I should get the pros to do my install, since the system has security feature andshould disable the airbag system if I want to work on the sound system?

Finally, can anybody can suggest a good high to low converter (or bad ones for me to avoid)? I'm in Canada. Thanks!

i had an 03 trailblazer and i have an 99 suburban and both has bose and the only way i could get anything to hook up to it was with a converter hooked to the front speakers out put off the h/u cause the rear speakers has built in bass blockers to kill most distortion if i still have the wire diagram then i might be able to scan it for you and pm it to you if i get my scanner working again i hope just make sure your amp gain settings is matching to the amp settings so you dont blow the amp most are 2 volt,i will check and see if i still have those diagrams for the stereo but i got them thru crutchfield thats where i get all my stereo stuff too they provide master sheets and diagrams just make sure you use the front channels on the h/u

I'm 99% sure that your factory amp is located under the center console. Probably the best place to get your speaker signal is from the speakers themselves, but I don't know how the Bose amp will like having your amp tied in.

RE: Stereo Wiring and Install Parts

I'm still not clear about the Delco Bose system in my 01 Jimmy. Is the power coming out of the wiring harness to the speakershigh level power or line level power. Because I heard that the best way to add an amp to the Delco Bose system is to add a Soundgate LOCB.4 between the head unit and the amplified speakers. If so, where are the amps for the Delco Bose system, in the armrest maybe? Or close to the speakers? Or under the dash somewhere? That's if the speaker wires coming from the wiring harness at the back of the radio are preamp out level, or lower, which I heard is the case for the Delco Bose.

This should be an easy bunch of questions for HillBillyinOhio, who has lots of knowledge and experience with Blazer sound systems. Thanks in advance for the great help!

Just bought a kit from wally world this weekend. The wire kit and plate only ran 20 bucks. The wires match the stereo color codes. I had the stock unit and my Alpine in in about 30 minutes.

Now I can have my sub and mp3/wma's again.

RE: Stereo Wiring and Install Parts

I wish I had read this post before replacing all 4 speakers in my 99 4door. Normally in electronics, positive is the lighter color and neg is the darker color. How nice that GM reversed that in the rear doors. I'll have to fix that come spring. In the mean time, I adjusted the HP and LP filters to the rear doors.

As for Bose, as was stated earlier, no problems replacing the factory HU, the crossovers are in the external amps. In a Corvette, you have to use a Soundgate, because it's a different Bose head with built in crossovers, supposedly only used in Vettes. Isn't that wonderful......................................... ..............NOT!!!

And Soundgates really attenuate the bottom end.

Hi there,

I just bought a 95 blazer LT, i love it! But the CD player (which is stock) shows error. Can't really afford to replace stereo right now, but was wondering if the stereo has an auxillary port or whatever, that I could plug in, or get an adapter, to plug in my mp3 sansa player to.

Or maybe you have another suggestion. Thank you! Great site by the way.

01Jimmy 01-05-2009 11:42 PM

RE: Stereo Wiring and Install Parts

In the old days, you could plug in CD players through an adapter fitting into the cassete player. I don't think there is a similar device for connecting an MP3 to your CD player, and I doubt if your deck has aux input jack to connect your MP3 to your deck (mine doesn't, 01 premium system). There may be a way to transmit the signal via FM to your radio though. Not 100% sure, someone else may know better.

RE: Stereo Wiring and Install Parts

I'm trying to install an aftermarket stereo in a '91 Blazer S-10.
The original Delco radio/tape deck just buzzes.
This forum has gotten me close, but no cigar.

I ordered the Scosche GM10B wiring harness (http://www.sonicelectronix.com/pictures.php?id=4500)
This comes with a large 12 wire female socket and a small one wire male plug per the picture.

The dash connectors in the Blazer include three male plugs (black, white, blue)that fit into the large Scosche socket, and a small 2-wire female socket.

Comparing the Dash connectors to the large Scosche Connector:
The three male dash connectors have 11 wires vs. the 12 wires in the Scosche.
The extra wire in the Scosche is a Blue = power antenna wire which I don't need. So I tape it off.
Every other wire in the Scosche corresponds with a wire in the dash connectors. Good.

Comparing the large Scosche connector to the stereo wiring harness:
I have two extra wires in the Scosche:
Blue = power antenna. Again, I tape this off since it's not needed
Orange = Illumination/Dash Light. I've got no wire on the stereo wiring harness to connect this to.

Now comparing the small Dash Connector to the small Scosche Connector:
The dash connector has two wires
Red = labelled as "A" on the dash connector
Black (or brown or dark gray - can't tell for sure) = labelled as "B" on the dash connector

The small Schosche connector has only one wire
Yellow = 12V battery constant

From the polarity of the connector, I can tell this yellow wire corresponds with the Red "A" wire in the dash connector.
I've got no available wire in the Scosche wiring harnessto connect to the Black "B" wire.
Do I need to connect something to this? What is this black "B" wire for?

To try to figure this out, I also took a look at the Metra connector (http://www.sonicelectronix.com/pictures.php?id=12448)
Note the Metra has a two-wire connector for the small connector.
One wire is the Yellow = 12v Battery Constant.
The additional wire is an Orange = Illumination/Dash Light wire. You can read the print on the picture.
I can see that thelarge Metra connector has an Orange-White = ??? wire that the Scosche doesn't have.

My first thought was to jumper the extra Orange=Illumination/Dash Light wire in the large Scosche connector over to the small connector, since the Metra picture implies that the missing wire in the two-wire connector is the orange wire.
But I'm scared to do this without knowing for sure.
One thing that concerns me about this is that if I do this, the orange wire would never go to the stereo, and in the original Delco stereo/tape deck, it did go to the tape deck. It may simply be a pass through to provide power for dash lighting, but I don't know this for sure.

My second thought was to order the Metra connector.
If I do this, I have a two wire connector that I can match up to the two wire connector in the dash.
But I still don't have a wire in the new stereo to connect the orange wire to.
And then I end up with an extra Orange-White wire in the large Metra connector that I don't know what to do with.
I think I still have the same question - do these get jumpered together bypassing the new stereo altogether?

Advice?

One more thing - even before starting with the stereo project, the dash lights in the Blazer weren't working. The fuse is good. This is the 5A circuit with instrument panel lights, ash tray light, etc.
Is it possible thatthe entire dash lighting circuit runs through this orange wire, that it's just a pass-through in the current stereo-tape deck, and somehow in the broken Delco stereo this circuit is just disconnected?
