I guess it doesn't matter for this situation, but I have a 1995 Chevy S10 Blazer 4x4 4dr.

I have had subs in this beast since I got it but I'm having a problem.

I just got an Alpine Type-S from someone on craigslist and I'm in denial that it is taking a poop on me, but i think I might have it wired wrong. (It smells like nasty, almost burning rubber at my normal operating volume.) I've watched the voice coils and I don't think they are burning up cuz they don't get hot or anything.
p.s. My amp isn't cranked all the way up or anything, it is actually tuned right. AND my head unit's power isn't even at half of what it can do, and bass boost ISNT on.

The sub is a dual voice coil (4 ohm v.c.'s). I want it to run at 2 ohms, so I have it wired POS to POS, NEG to NEG, and then POS and NEG from the first voice coil to the amp.

From what I've read, you are not suppose to run the POS and NEG from the same voice coil to the amp, but why would that matter if it's ran in parallel? (they are connected together anyway, right?) I'm just kind of confused as to why they would have to be ran from the opposite voice coils.

I had 2 of these subs and they BOTH had the same smell, and they were wired the same way.Please help me on this.

This is making me want to cry because I can't turn my volume up without smelling this nasty stench.

 

the wiring is fine long as your wires are large enough... whats the amp specs for output? are you sure its the sub smelling?

 

Do you have a multimeter? Measure the ohms from the wires going to the amp and make sure it says 2. If not, you could try running the negative wire from the second coil to the amp instead.

 

What size wire should I be using to bridge the voice coils? And I'm 100% sure it's coming from the sub. I took it out of the box and smelled the sub, and sure enough it's coming from it.

I'll have to use my buddy's multimeter to check on that one. And what do you mean by running the neg wire from the second coil to the amp?

I have mine wired like number 1. I heard that's bad. I read it SHOULD be like number 2. But what would happen if I wired it like number 3???

And if none of these are what you're talking about, please give me a visual of some sort PLEASE!!!

Umm... That picture clearly states that it is a 4 ohm load. And because I have dual 4 ohm, I would be at 8 ohms. I aint havin that.
