I'm going to do some plastic/epoxy work on my console lid. . .thought I might try recovering it after I'm done. Also planning to try to use some of this vinyl to improve the dash rather than spending $150 on a new dash cap.
Just have to figure out how to use the wife's sewing machine. We'll see how it turns out. . .
LOL - get yourself a set of needles for the machine, else you are in trouble when breaking hers and she want's to sew something.
Good Tip lol. I've currently got the console lid torn apart, and almost have the base back together to where I'm happy with it. . . . it was in about 8-10 pieces when I started. Going to skim the top with bondo to make it smooth and give it a little extra support. Right now I'm looking at trying to reuse the OE rubber/vinyl top but the foam is pretty destroyed.
Almost done with the console lid. Just need to get some new foam, and contact adhesive to glue it back together.
I did sand the top down a bit but didn't take a picture. It seems pretty sturdy now. . .I was going to get more epoxy and fill in some of the voids on the bottom of it, but I don't think that's going to be necessary.
Here is a picture of the cover after I hit half of it with the Peroxide cream and let sit in the sun for a while.
I've done the whole cover now and it looks much better. . .definitely got rid of the yellow/brown discoloration that I couldn't clean off. It's a little splotchy in places where the saran wrap bubbled up, so I'll do one more quick pass on it.
I put it all back together to test fit, and put it back in the car. . . it's much nicer feeling now, even without the foam. . you can lean on the console and it's not total mush.
I'll post pics and another video of it once I'm totally finished.
Pretty much done with my console lid now. I still need to go buy a hinge and figure out how to securely attach it to the plastic, to fully restore the open/close operation.
Ended up cutting most of the old foam out. . . I left a bit at the front and the 4 corners. Then I cut 4, 2mm foam sheets to fit. I glued the sheets down to the cover one at a time, then reinstalled the cover over the base.
I'll post a video of the whole process tomorrow.
Overall I'm pleased with the results. . . I didn't realize just how much the Peroxide Cream did until I made before/after picture. Huge difference!! I'll definitely be using that one a few of my other interior parts that have yellowed a bit. As far as the plastic base. . .I'm not sure how long my epoxy repairs are going to hold up, as 2 small cracks opened back up when refitting the cover. I put another layer of epoxy in those areas, so we'll see.
