2nd Gen Blazer Bumper Build :P

Ok so i thought it was messed up that there isn't a aftermarket off-road bumper available (anymore) for our blazers. So i set out on a mission to build one. I started today with cardboard and a general picture of what i wanted. If all goes well ill be selling them for 280 plus shipping only to USA because canadian customs plus shipping to canada cost way to much i could possibly go across the border and ship it since i live close to montreal. so here is my progress so far tell me what you think and anything i should change.

warthogdriver 01-25-2011 04:48 PM

any pics from dif. angles?
looks a bit big to me, off to a good start though.
i like the general idea you are going for ,just need to see some more to say for sure.

kinter614 01-25-2011 05:01 PM

tell me the angles you want and ill go take pictures of it its not completely made yet i just threw that together. The pic i had of the bumper i planed on making a copy of is here its actually smaller than the stock bumper its 9inches wide but there is the part that goes down from thats what makes it look so big

http://i1203.photobucket.com/albums/...ion/wu3sk7.jpg

but over all its a nice bumper i think im going to make it and if i dont like it modify it till i do but i most likely will like it

warthogdriver 01-25-2011 05:12 PM

ok, now i see what you are going for.
i like that one too.

customize it and see what variations you come up with.

oktain 01-25-2011 05:23 PM

lol, that's a picture of a member's truck here. Georgesblaza. He hasn't been active in roughly a year but I keep seeing pictures of his truck pop up lol.

If you can get that look, it'll be a really nice bumper. Personally, if someone from Canada wants to pay shipping and customs you should ship them up.

kinter614 01-25-2011 05:25 PM

oh i deff would all cost to them and yea i LOVE his bumper thats why i want to replicate it :P

warthogdriver 01-25-2011 06:54 PM

what thickness steel are you going to use?
have thought about this before, dont think i can weld that well yet

NVANZEE 01-25-2011 07:11 PM

yeah i love the looks of his bumper too. Im actually planing on building mine in a few weeks or so after i get the winch to mount behind it. I will be sure to post pics when im done. I plan on doing one for the rear too.

kinter614 01-25-2011 08:51 PM

ill be using 3/16th
i was going to use 1/8th and gusset it a $H!t Load but i figured id just use 3/16th

well deff tell us how yours turns out NVANZEE

ill be making it this week for sure since im off from school all week :P

i love that bumper..and im so down buy something like that... lets see what you got....

dougg01 02-14-2011 08:50 AM

Well.....pics please...

Once I get a welding bench put together I will be looking at fabbing something. Not sure what yet.... Would like to do custom front and rear, but materials are not cheap.

Steinbruchsoldat 02-15-2011 05:46 AM

Do you plan putting an angle in it like the one above?

What about a winch mount?

kinter614 02-15-2011 03:39 PM

i have angles in it just i dont have the side pieces made yet havent gotten my blazer over to school in a couple weeks but i did do alot of welding today :P inside and outside is welded i however dont plan on putting a winch hole in there yet since i just dont have the funds to buy a winch to put in it and it would look stupid if there was just a big hole there with nothing to fill it up

well heres some pic's :P

Looking good so far...

I`d put some beefy mounts to the frame in there, though...

Damn, you made me build my own bumper...

its going to be boxed in with gussets :P and the bolt is going to be welded on to make it easier to take off and put on

Steinbruchsoldat 02-15-2011 04:48 PM

Which bolt do you want to weld in? The nuts are on the car, so how do you plan on tighten them?

I think I`ll use some plates that mounts to the frame where the tow hooks where...

oktain 02-15-2011 05:38 PM

Looking good so far. Nice welds too. Not sloppy and look strong

warthogdriver 02-15-2011 05:58 PM

i have to agree, looks great so far.
looks like something i would buy.

kinter614 02-15-2011 07:36 PM

i plan on welding them all seeing i have a 2 inch BL i only use the 4 that hook to the frame. and ill put nuts on the the bottom since im using a different bolt size (1/2 grade 8) so its just for reassurance also im not using the BL pucks im just mounting it right to the frame

i hope i can sell a couple of them it would be so nice right now but oh well make stuff for myself till someone comes along but price for a bumper is 300 plus shipping

old skool luvr 02-15-2011 07:52 PM

not too bad on the welding, considering you just learned.

keep up the good work.

kinter614 02-15-2011 08:01 PM

yea the front welds were better but i have like 12 hours on and off of welding this bumper because i let it cool and stuff but i couldn't get pic's of the welds in the front i ground them down before i took the pictures but i literally just started mig (officially) 2 weeks ago i have welded on and off with it but right now im strictly on mig

To everyone i have been funded by my school to make a roof rack out of 1/2x1/2 square stock solid so ill be starting that in the next few days giving my bumper a rest :P i know i should really get it dont but i cant get my truck to design the side parts

Update:

well i mounted my bumper :P looks good if i must say so myself well here are pic's ill get some of the side pieces once i finish them tomorrow :P also started on my roof rack (not perfect but hey i had to do it by myself and thats hard when you cant hold 4 things at once) well heres the pic's

TripleBlackBlazer 02-17-2011 08:55 PM

Profile shot? How much do you have in it as far as materials?

old skool luvr 02-17-2011 10:49 PM

also wondering if you've weighed it yet?

kinter614 02-18-2011 05:46 AM

i have a good 250 bucks in materials thats metal, mig wire, co2 gas, d-shackels, flap wheels, grinding disks bolts

no i havent weighed it yet havent had it home i would say its like 50 pounds

Steinbruchsoldat 02-18-2011 07:04 AM

Wow that thing`s huge...

Did you consider to put in another angle on the bumper ends? I think it`s a little wide on the edges...

s14sh3r 02-18-2011 09:22 AM

Looks beastly. With the shackles and a paint job it'll look good. You going to mount any lights on it?

azblazer96 02-18-2011 01:20 PM

Been looking for an aftermarket bumper for awhile and no one seems to make them. Looking forward to seeing your finished product. Any plans on a rear bumper to match?

Jar3tt 02-18-2011 01:42 PM

looks real good. what thickness metal did you use?

DKSDAD 02-18-2011 04:32 PM

Very nice.

as stated before 3/16th

Thanks, for pointing me to your thread. Nice job, u gave me some ideas. I read the whole thread. What diameter steel did u use. 1/8 or 1/4??

How did u end up mounting on the frame rails? Did u drill the frame and weld in a nut to bolt it?

Opps sorry didnt see that 3/16 cool. Think I might go 1/4. But I love the idea

POWERSTROKEN 02-20-2011 07:59 PM

Sweet. Nice Job. Jim

420Blazin4X4 02-21-2011 01:22 AM

your welcome and thank you :P
there is already holes in the frame for the stock bumper so instead of using my 2 inch body pucks i just put the mounting holes 2 inches farther down than i would have with a stock blazer

1/4 = 2x OVER KILL!!!!!! even 3/16 is overkill they make offroad bumpers for jeeps out of 1/8th

(please watch your double posts just hit the edit button xD)
