96 SFA Swap

Welp it has begun i just purchased my axles I'm going with 1988 wagoneer dana 44s, and got a pretty good deal on them $300 for the axles, drive shaft, leaf springs, and all the steering components. All I'm waiting on is to hear back from joey @ 4wdfactory to see if he can get a hold of an ORD kit.

My main worries are
1: How can abs be achieved with these axles.
2: Do i need to swap to an astro steering box.
3: Drive shafts. It came with the rear ds, but not the front.
4: 4wd indicator lamp for the front axle.

I'll throw some pics up of my truck currently and the axles when i get them tomorrow.

hope this helps a bit

1: no abs, sorry
2: you don't have to, but it will make it a lot easier.
3: they are tricky. rear is fairly easy, front is real custom
4: so long as your hubs are locked it works like stock

5: you need a new/modified trans x-member
6: a slip yoke eliminator is a good idea

yeah forget the abs. i remember reading on another site that if you actually put in newer axles from a newer jeep that has abs you can make it work somehow but yeah i just cut my wires, i dont know how abs would be offroad probably cause all sorts of problems

Thanks for the replies guys. so can i scrap all the abs stuff... I'ed rather not have it on there unless i have to or it would be easier to leave it.

Do i need to replace the output shaft for the front on the tcase?

I remember reading somewhere on here that someone transferred the ABS parts over to the solid axles. I dont remember how, but i dont think ABS would be very fun on a trail

If you make hub spacers you can run factory s10 hubs on a d30 and keep abs... with a d44 its pretty much impossible.

FWIW I ditched ABS on both my trucks and have never looked back. Driving offroad and in the snow is much safer now.

to the OP, yes you'll have to switch to a fixed output shaft and yoke on the t case...

Your truck being a 96 may complicate things though... Normally people just steal a 231J output shaft and yoke, but Jeep 231's all have a 1" chain / output gear, and the earlier model 2nd gen s-series have a 1.25" chain. You can try to find a fixed output shaft from a 1st gen s-series (has 1.25" chain and will work with jeep yoke), or i think the dodge 231's had 1.25" parts that will work.

Here's a good how to http://outsideventure.com/Projects/tcase_mod

a doner pre 95 NP231C works well for the front output shaft, and a Cherokee works well for a front yoke and front driveshaft.

I dont think you're going to get that ORD kit, if thats Off road direct you're talking about, unless joey somehow has a few stashed away.

Is There possibly an rpo code that tells what tcase is in the vehicle? That would make Finding one @ the boneyard 100x easier.
Thanks for all the replies guys...

Also amazing build thread you have KM. You and atvwarriors builds are the ones that made me take the leap to SAS.

Im stoked cant wait to get to building.

the sure way to find the case you need is from a 93-94 s-10 truck or blazer 4wd. it will have a u-joint front output on the transfer case and a NP231 on the round ID tag on the back.
