How To: Paint your rear window trim (2 door) with pics
Okay so I've gotten a few PM's regarding how i went about painting my rear window trim on my 2 door. so i figured why the hell not put up a how to thread. (Please keep in mind that i manage a body shop that my father owns so i have access to top pro grade materials and tools. everything i describe can be done by hand and i did a lot of it by hand but i did have some power tools to speed things up and top grade paint and clearcoat so results may vary but the procedure is the same and as long as you use something like duplicolor you should be ok)
so this is what all 2 doors start out with http://i763.photobucket.com/albums/x...ckpassside.jpg http://i763.photobucket.com/albums/x...driverside.jpg you can't really tell but they are all chewed up from years out in the forida sun and wherever the hell my truck had been before i bought it. now first thing i did was i tried to use some 80 grit sandpaper to bring the roughness down a bit and give the primer and bondo/polyester filler something to bite to. DO NOT OVERSAND THIS IS 80 GRIT PAPER IT WILL RUIN THE SHAPE OF THE PANEL IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL!!!!!!! Just a slight rubdown by hand will do the trick (for novices i suggest using some duct tape along the edges so you dont mess up your paint. make sure to use duct tape not masking tape 80 grit will eat masking tape up) i then went ahead and taped off the windows and area around the window and primed it. i used a spray gun but rattle can primer should do it just as well just make sure to get the equivalent to 2K high build automotive primer. next step is to sand the first coat of primer with 180 grit sandpaper (you have to do this to get the glossyness (for lack of a better word) off the primer and give the body filler something to bite to then go ahead and using THIN coats cover and fill the holes. http://i763.photobucket.com/albums/x...2/104_0034.jpg http://i763.photobucket.com/albums/x...2/104_0037.jpg http://i763.photobucket.com/albums/x...2/104_0038.jpg i know it looks thick but i kinda messed up and spread it too thick. all you need is a thin coat to fill the holes. sand the filler down with 180 grit paperso a smooth even surface. once all the high and low spots are taken care of go ahead and give the whole thing another sand down with 220 grit paper and reprime. sorry i do not have any pictures of the trim in primer forgot my camera at home both days i primed (nitial pre bondo prime and then post bondo prime) let the primer sit for about 10 minutes for it to flash and give it another coat. now just sand the primer with 400 grit paper and paint whaever color you want. http://i763.photobucket.com/albums/x...2/104_0048.jpg http://i763.photobucket.com/albums/x...2/104_0043.jpg there ya go finished painted (to match) rear window trim. any questions just shoot me a PM |
thanks blaze glad i (and a few others) hounded ya bout posting a how to :P
Wow, great write up! good to see an instruction on how to do it.
you guys can just take the panels off and send em to me ill do em for ya (for a price) lol. or if ya want perfect results i can see what i can do about getting new ones and painting them up for you guys and shipping them to ya.

Seeing as I live just across the state from you. I should drop my Blazer off some day, and have you do that for me, lol. You have to see mine. They look GOD AWFUL! My truck has always been in Florida, and judging by that, and the paint, the truck was kept outside pretty much all it's life.
I don't even need a pic, you can see them in my sig, lol. |

i can do em slimer green real cheep tho if ya really want it lol
Can you do indigo blue for free? That would be great. lol
nah sorry bro cant do it for free.
dammit
looks good. it's just too bad that GM screwed you 2 door guys with that trim. but if it was an easy fix, everyone would have colour matched panels.
it is an easy fix if you are just willing to take the time

Damn that looks great. I'm going to try to work up the courage to do this myself. If I can't and you're serious about doing them for people- how much and how long would it take you to do this? I'm in the Brandon area btw.
Very nice!
I can see some sun rot beginning to appear, but nothing too major to worry about yet on mine.
This is not an easy fix, unless you have pro tools and experience such as yourself.
I spent 8 hours and got crap results, I have a thread on it somewhere. Feel free to look it over and critique if you would like. |
well it took me a week to do by myself and im by no means experience in body work ima mechanic by trade and messed up real bad spreading the bondo too thick and all i used most of the time was my hand and some sandpaper.
Maybe not using bondo is where I went wrong..

Going to try for round 2? |
yes if they are eaten up bondo is a MUST
How hard is it to remove the trim? I was thinking about just ordering new one or trying to find better used ones to paint.
You got a two door?
If so, then when you remove the trim, the Glass is coming out with it. It's all one piece. |
yup i found that out the hard way lmao was at the junk yard...and found a 2dr with a busted back window...and was like...wth, lemmie see what'd it'd take to get it off..well hell...the trim came off with some brute force and a crow bar...and the busted window fell on my legs and feet, lucky for me i was wearing my old construction gear (carpenter jeans and steel toe boots)..it cut up the boots a little bit..so i'm just gonna stick with painting the trim WHILE on the truck..
well scratch that idea. looks like ill just putty them up and paint em

ill take pics when im done i should be doing that plus rockers this weekend weather permiting
blazer, im in daytona, how much would ya charge for mine?
bump? blazerguy.... i need color! :P
sadly matt i dont own the shop anymore had to close down due to the economy and no work coming in the doors. so i dunno if/when i could get them done. its a weekend project i know that but i have to get in touch with my painter and see when he would be able to paint them.
i did the trim panels with herculiner and i like it but bondo'ing the panels wouldn't be to hard i have used bondo a couple times on my rig and you cant even tell where i used it as long as you sand it down to look good it is hard to tell where u use it also you have to have a good paint job to mask it :)
If you have never used bondo before you may try using glazing putty. Get a very small spreader and put it on a little at a time straight from the tube and sand with a finer grit paper. If you have small chips and such glazing putty works pretty good.
I just bought a xtreme blazer and i was wondering if anyone knows how to take these panels off, i live in GA and i would like to get the fixed and painted to match the truck.
That look really good. How are you at color matching and how much would you want to do it?
How about a List of All Supplies needed like what diffent size sand paper and everything else needed
