My Pontiac Sunflower Project (lots of pics)
Well some of you know a bit about this build from another forum. Its a 96 Pontiac Sunfire GT. I bought it stock last April for $1000. Heres what it looked like when I bought it.
http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/IMG_0737.jpg http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/IMG_0738.jpg http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/IMG_0735.jpg I wanted to make a nice low budget daily driver so I started working on it a bit. First thing was the body work to get rid of some dings and dents and to shave the ugly factory wing. Also the previous owner burnt the clear while buffing the car. http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/IMG_0902.jpg http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/IMG_0912.jpg [IMG] Wing is gone http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/IMG_0903.jpg http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/IMG_0907.jpg Then came paint, midnight black metallic with a touch of dark blue flake. http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/IMG_1014.jpg http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/IMG_1012.jpg Tails were tinted aswell http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/IMG_1013.jpg After that came the wheels and suspension: 2001 Z24 wheels painted black and gold and a set of Eibach springs and KYB AGX struts. 1.5" drop all around. http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/IMG_1134.jpg http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...Picture001.jpg http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...fire/fire4.jpg http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...fire/fire1.jpg Then came the interior. Fabric seats were reupholstered in leather and door panels were wrapped in carbon fiber vinyl. Also fiberglassed the rear deck http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...nfire/sun8.jpg http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/IMG_1262.jpg http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...e/IMG_1264.jpg http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...fire/seat1.jpg http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...IMG_1260-1.jpg Then a few weeks ago the head gasket decided to go, so decided to buy a performance head for it. Ported and polished, 3 angle valve job, 1mm oversized stainless valves. Only pic of the head. Motor is all back together. Just need to put the rest of the mess back on. Also bought a ton of replacement parts while I had the engine apart. Love how cheap, parts are for this thing. http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...nfire/head.jpg http://i463.photobucket.com/albums/q...ffix/parts.jpg Thats where is stands at this time. Tint is coming this spring so are new wheels and tires. Its a great dd, really good on gas and it has some nice pep to it. |
I forgot about this project lol. Didn't you have this up on the former GMTF? I seem to remember it. Nice progress though. I love the rims.
Looks good so far. I gotta agree on the rims, they look awesome!
That is a sweet sunflower
thanks. these rims will be winter wheels. Im picking up a new set of wheels and tires in the spring. Ive been looking at getting gloss black with yellow lip. What you guys think.

I personally prefer a chrome lip, but yellow would look good. How much was it to have the interior re-upholstered? I want to re-do mine in leather, too.
Very nice build
Yellow lip would look sick

Me gusto mucho! Really digging the progress man. I'd love to do something like this.
you don't see to many nice ones like that. usaully they are in a trailer park all beat up
Well I just found a used GM supercharger on criagslist for $700.00. Waiting to hear back from the seller. This is what it looks like

Super charged Sunfire? Never heard of that but it would still be pretty cool.
Nice clean car :D good work. you painted that?

Sweet, I've tossed the idea of super charging my Jimmy around in my head, but really don't have the money to do it.
It was asked before, but how much was it to re-upholster?
Nice job overall, I love tasteful customs. Thanks for keeping the stock body lmao, all of our eyes appreciate it. Those yellow rims would look cool, they'd REALLY pop out with the rest of the car being black. |
The seats were actually from a friends cavalier. the car had the same seats in it. He totaled his cav and sold me the seats for $200.00. it cost close to $600 to have them done.
and yea i kept the body pretty stock minus the wing. Im not a fan of body kits. Maybe a lip kit if they ever made one for this. |
Any reason why you'd go supercharged over turbo? You'd never see the power out of a supercharger that you would out of a turbo setup. I suppose price is a major factor though eh?.
Yea price is the big issue, not just for the turbo setup but also for the upgrades needed fuel, ignition ect. Also turbo managment plays a big part aswell. lot more complex then a supercharger.
so with this supercharger you won't have to rebuild the engine? seems pretty nice
Not with this kit. GM made this kit to run on stock internals. I have a friend that has been running this kit on his cav for 75,000 miles. Car has 190k and not a single problem. This kit was made for 2000+ 2.4L so what I need to do to make it work on a pre 2000 is, 2000 starter (smaller starter) few bucks at parts yard. Egr block off plate. A bigger fuel pump, which i already have and a fuel management unit. Also a wideband o2 sensor. Im going to be tuning with hp tuners. Thats if I can get my hands on this kit first. havent heard back from the seller yet.
Do you have the Quad 4, or Ecotec?
*edit* Looks like the Quad 4 is in there. |
Wow, this Sunfire actually looks good. And I'm on board for the yellow lipped rims lol. As for the "eyelids" I saw you throw on, not a big fan. But if you like 'em, go right ahead! It's your car after all lol
Im with CBR on the chrome lip, but I like the yellow too. Very tastefully done, looks great!
the yellow lip would be .
and those Supercharger kits make some sick power. i remember talking to a guy from GM @ Performance World the year the kit came out, they had a (heavily) tweaked one there that had dyno'd just under 900hp on Ultra94. you definately need to keep us updated on what happens with that guy and the Supercharger. |
Here is a pic of the wheels ill be getting. I am going to have the body shop paint the lips yellow. They will be 18's

Those are nice, very simple. And you can't go wrong with the old 5 spoke!

are you going to get he universal lug pattern or are you going to get the pattern for your car? I think the universal ones don't look as nice
Its going to be universal. 5x100/5x114. Its getting harder and more expensive to find wheels a single bolt pattern anymore.
wow really I always thought the universal rims cost more. what part of PA are you from?
