My small 93 burban build...

14 Attachment(s)
Well after the Yukon was wrecked I had to decide what to do with it and it worked out that after insurance and buying it back from them and then selling it to my boss I lost about $50 so all in all it worked out alright for me lol! So I had a pile of cash and wanted to spend it naturally so I booked a 7 day Caribbean cruise for the Wife and I in October and then picked up a new project/play toy today (well really Friday but I picked it up today)! It's a 93' with only 108k on the clock two owner no accident clean burban. It was owned since 2000 by an older guy that only put 25k on it in 15 years. He didn't drive it the last 3 years due to health and ended up passing away so his wife was selling off some of his many vehicles. Naturally from sitting it needs a few things but nothing major that I can tell so far. The lady put a charger on the battery the night before I was coming and after checking to be sure it had fluids I just wanted to see if it would turn over and to my surprise a quick flick of the key and it started right up! It ran like crap of course but started. So I paid her and we did the paperwork. She was such a sweet old lady I couldn't even bring myself to try and haggle the wopping price of $1400 so that's what I paid for it.
At her house

The paint on the hood and roof is crap but the rest of the paint is great. Sadly the tires were like new but completely dry rotted from sitting for so long so it needed tires. Naturally I searched craigslist and then remembered the guy I got my 14 bolt from had some wheels I was considering buying from him for the Yukon so I called him and he showed up about 2 hours later not with the wheels I had wanted but with a set none the less! Not my first choice of wheels but they are all brand new including lug nuts and center caps. He said $200 for all four and I said sold!

While unloading them I couldn't figure out why they were so damn heavy and then found this little sticker:)
https://blazerforum.com/forum/attach...ine=1428965720
Turns out they have run flat inserts installed and came from a fully armored van that was parted out!
Went today to pick it up and brought it back to my shop to start messing around. So far I've done cap, rotor, plugs, wires oil change, pcv, and a sea foam. It runs good at idle but under load it's bogging and stumbling most of the time. I'm pretty certain I have a few vacuum leaks so I picked up all the lines and fittings on my way home tonight and I'll swap everything tomorrow and see how that turns out. But for now here it is back at my shop with the new tires on.

Still have to put the center caps on and give it a bath yet. Sorry for the ridiculously long post!

Tajohns34 04-14-2015 09:20 AM

I really like those wheels on there. They look almost like soft 8s.

rexmburns 04-14-2015 11:30 AM

Thanks! I wasn't sure of them at first and threw them on CL to see if I could make a few dollars but now I'm thinking I'm going to keep them and paint them black but leave the center caps silver.

Jamaroon 04-14-2015 12:50 PM

Looks like it's in pretty good shape. Paint the wheels black and run 'em!

Does it have a MAF sensor? I'd put that on the list of things to try.

Tajohns34 04-14-2015 02:46 PM

If you do want to sell those wheels and tires I would be very interested. I have a 92 k1500 in desperate need of tires.

CWBDDSPC 04-14-2015 03:12 PM

My first Silverado was a 94. I miss how you could control the amount of air directed though the upper and lower vents with those...

Nice buy!

Rained yesterday so I didn't touch it but it was nice today so I spent a bit of time messing with it. I replaced the vacuum lines and fittings and then decided I should finally change the fuel filter since I bought it but didn't change it and now I wish I would have done it sooner cause as soon as I pulled it rusty gas just poured out and I knew immediately the tank was crap:( sure enough I dropped the tank and even tho the pump and filter were new as of last June the tank was rusted out inside and clogging up the pump and filter. So rather than even messing with trying to clean this tank I just went ahead and ordered a new one that should be here Monday or Tuesday. In the mean time I decided to rip apart the tbi and rebuild/new gasket it just for good measure:). I'm %99.9 percent positive that it will be ready to go as soon as I get the new tank in next week!
Hand fulls of this in the tank!

Nothing small bout a Burbon

Tajohns34 04-16-2015 05:00 AM

When the fuel pump on my 92 died I priced out tanks just in case mine was rusty inside. I was surprised how inexpensive the fuel system is on these old K series are.

That's for sure! The gas tank is 42 gallons! I'm happy I only had about 5 gallons in there!

Yeah most everything seems to be fairly cheap so far. I got the tank for $116 shipped:) they have them priced all the way up over $300 for the same dang thing!

I think I'm going to try and find time to paint the rims today since the weather is nice and there's not much else I can do anyway with no gas tank in there lol.

Tajohns34 04-16-2015 07:49 AM

I was surprised how clean mine was inside considering the rest of the truck is all rust. It was all nice shiny metal. Once all that gunk is cleared out it should run pretty good.

I didn't take a close pic but you can see I preserved the run flat stickers by taping them off before painting.

DesertStorm 04-16-2015 04:49 PM

looks good.

rexmburns 04-16-2015 04:59 PM

Thanks I am going to see if I can find a set of the PPV center caps and lug nuts for them for cheap.

They good in black and they really look like soft 8s now.

rexmburns 04-17-2015 08:14 AM

I'll see what I can do as far as getting another set for you. I'll have to get a good pic in the sunlight cause they are really glossy but look dull in the pic.

Night_Wolf 04-17-2015 09:27 AM

Hahaha didn't your Blazer start out as a "small" build too? Never the less this is a cool project, those rims look good painted!

rexmburns 04-17-2015 09:46 PM

Yeah if I keep it I'm sure I will be doing way more than I say now just like I did with the blazer! My buddy is already trying to convince me to SFA it lol.

Tajohns I'll know Monday or Tuesday if I can get another set of wheels for you.

Got the gas tank from ups nice and early this am and had the truck up and running about 45 minutes later. It runs prefect now that it is getting steady fuel! After driving around the parking lot and a short trip to the gas station I felt it was ready for a solid road test so I drive it about 50 miles without a hiccup... Well there was one minor hiccup lol can you spot what's missing?
https://blazerforum.com/forum/attach...ine=1429567588

Yup about 4 miles from the shop it got louder and then I looked in the rearview to see the muffler bouncing down the road behind me lol! I knew it was going to need exhaust just didn't figure it would be this soon. So I jumped online and looked for some exhaust and ended up with a Dynomax full stainless cat back system that should be here in a day or two. Later on I'll probably add headers and a new y pipe with high flow cat so this will easily adapt to that and at $130.56 shipped to my door for the full kit I couldn't really do any better! Gotta love online discount codes!

Tajohns34 04-20-2015 08:55 PM

I love online discount codes.

rexmburns 04-20-2015 09:07 PM

They save me so much money! I should be able to have another set of wheels and tires possibly by the end of next week if your still interested. Shoot me a pm if you'd like.

Tajohns34 04-21-2015 08:54 AM

PM sent.

Well it's been a minute since I updated and not allot of fun things have happened but I did get the new gas tank in and new exhaust installed and it's running about as perfect as you can ask for! I took it in for safety and emissions inspections so I could register it and everything passed without issue. The emissions are tested at the tail pipe and it actually tells you a bit about how clean your motor is running and this thing is clean!
https://blazerforum.com/forum/attach...ine=1430182868

https://blazerforum.com/forum/attach...ine=1430182868

So it's registered insured and doing DD duty for now. I have about 500 miles I it and except for an unbalanced tire that I had my buddy take care of tonight it hasn't had a single hiccup(knock on wood)!

jbrooks19 04-30-2015 11:05 AM

I'm thinking you need a wicked big rack on the roof!

El_Beautor 04-30-2015 01:26 PM

Oh great. :icon_confused: Rex is starting another "small" build. Here comes another 1000+ page thread about all the neat ideas and great deals that eventually turn it into a freaking monster truck. Check back in a year and the thing will be 18' tall with an elevator installed so that his wife and kids can still get in. You'll see Rex rolling down the highway sucking Prius' into the engine to use as fuel so he can call it a hybrid.

The truck looks good Rex. It sucks about the Yukon, but hopefully it works out well for you in the end. :icon_lol:

Well not a lot has happened lately but I've made a few things happen! The burban has been running without a single issue for almost 3k miles now and it is time to show it a little love. The hood was dented and the paint was crap so I've been searching around for a factory replacement but people seem to think they are made of gold around here wanting $200 plus for them! I found a aftermarket hood that I have been watching since I bought the burban and the price started at $275 but has been slowly coming down over the last month or so and today I went and picked it up for a $100!! Its in primer ready to paint so I am going to see what it is going to cost to paint it to match my truck and go from there on how I proceed with paint.

I also converted the AC to r134 and it is working great!

Tajohns34 06-04-2015 07:23 AM

Nice hood! You stole that thing for $100.

newguy 06-04-2015 07:26 AM

would look better on the blazer

rexmburns 06-04-2015 08:04 AM

I am still searching for a WS6 style hood for the blazer! If I find one for the right price I will buy for sure:)

Haven't done much with the burban besides drive it! It really hasn't needed anything and has been running great for over 5K miles now (knock on wood). I bought some oil and a filter for it today and ordered the pigtail I need to get my temp gauge working again.

Oh and I built a flag pole to fly my flag for the 4th:) It looks bent in the pic but its an optical illusion lol its straight I promise!

Took the burban on a 500 mile round trip to drop the oldest off at lacrosse camp on Monday and it did awesome. Even through the mountains literally the entire way to and from I left home with a full tank and still had a quarter tank left when I got home! SInce it did/has been doing so well I decided it was time to show it some love:)

I've been doing a lot of reading regarding the TBI and upgrades for it so I figured it was time to start with a couple of them. I started with removing the ridges around the bores and opening them up a bit. I will also order a injector pod riser and TBI spacer in a day or two but for now heres some pics!

Before: For anyone not familiar with these you can pretty clearly see how restricting the ridges are to air getting into the intake.

These are the tools I chose to use obviously attached to a Dremel
https://blazerforum.com/forum/attach...ine=1436994158
Ridges roughly removed. The cutting bit made quick easy work of these.

After a bit of work with a sanding roll.
https://blazerforum.com/forum/attach...ine=1436994158
https://blazerforum.com/forum/attach...ine=1436994158

And then finally the finished product. I messed up a bit on one of the raised spots that surround the entire TBI but I don't think that it will cause me any issues since there is a gasket there anyway

Up next I will be installing by new hood and building a box to make the ram air "functional" along with a new intake hat.

I test fit the hood today to see where things landed and was going to leave it on but found that I need to buy a bolt on latch for the hood side as the factory hood is welded on and the fiberglass is not:(

And the part I need

Jamaroon 07-15-2015 04:25 PM

Double posting noob! :D

Glad the burb is treating you well.

Has there been any proof that removing those ridges does anything? I have my doubts about it.

rexmburns 07-15-2015 05:14 PM

Haha my bad:(

I was skeptical myself to be honest! After doing all the reading I could find about it I decided what the hell why not it didn't cost anything beside the few dollars I spent I the dremel bits so I'm not out anything really either.

So for my personal review after about 20 miles I can honestly say it takes a bit less throttle to get up to speed but it's not like I bolted on a turbo by any means! The biggest thing I noticed immediately was about 50-100 rpm drop at idle and its even smoother than it was before. Other than that I don't really notice any change. For the cost and tone I think it was probably worth it just don't expect tire blazing changes in power lol!

The future plans will be the ram air intake as stated first then probably a set of headers and full exhaust and then likely a cam and a new chip to take advantage of the few things I'm doing. It's amazing that you can get a new cam lifters and springs for under $150 for these motors but the cam alone for my LS motor is like $300 lol.

Jamaroon 07-16-2015 07:26 AM

Fair enough.

Re. the mods.... next thing you know it's going to have a 6.2L LS motor, rockwells and 54" Claws and you're still going to call it your small burban build :P

Well I had to go and mess with it didn't I!! Started the truck yesterday turned on the a.c. to cool it off turned around and it shut off like I had turned the key off:( didn't have time to mess with it so I left it be and we took the wife's car since we were already late to a baseball game.

So after waking up today and taking the new blazer before I even left the parking space the rear view mirror fell off in my hand trying to adjust it and the entire day went down hill fast!!. Sitting in a meeting this am after getting to work I get a phone call from my cousin that I knew would be coming but was dreading that my grandma passed away last night:( then an hour later my delivery team calls me and says the truck is "squirting something from a metal hose" so ask then to send me a pic and where they are. Of course they are over an hour away so road trip here I come. It sprouted a leak in one of the heater pipes so I rigged it up with some muffler putty and then wrapped it in muffler sealant tape and sent them on their way. The fix worked for today and the parts are being overnighted so I can fix it properly tomorrow or Wednesday.

While on my road trip I noticed the blazer was running a bit warm even on the highway so I figured I should swap the tstat. After letting it cool for a bit back at work I pulled the housing to find it didn't even have a tstat in it! That should have been a sign if it was running warm with no tstat but I figured since the PO was running straight water that wasn't helping anything so I didn't think much of it. Well driving home to fix the burban I'm two blocks from home and the temp spikes and then pulling into home the gauge drops flat as I'm pulling into my spot! Shut it off and pop the hood to find the lower rad hose spewing water. No big deal except I have to pick my son up from daycare in 45 min and I'm now stuck at home with two broken down vehicle's and no way to get him. The wife was at work in a meeting so reaching her wasn't happening so thank god for good friends 10 minutes later I had a buddy picking me and the car seat up to get the kid and another lined up to watch him for me while I messed with trucks:)

Anyway I swing by and picked up the rad house and started on that and the husband of the friend watching Bentley came to help me so we had the hose swapped relatively quickly after he made a trip top his storage locker to get his hose clamp pliers and filled it up with coolant started it and everything is good... Well kinda it still got really hot really quickly and I could feel the tstat open but still stayed hot at idle but weirdly if you held it above 2k the temp would drop so to me that says water pump issues. So I closed it up and went back to the burban.

First thing I did was try fuel in the tb and no change so it's a spark issue. Checked all connections everything is good so I pulled the cap and the button on the cap is gone fried right off and the rotor looks like crap!! It's an Accell cap and rotor that I put on when I bought the truck so a little of 5k miles ago wtf! After some reading I guess I have to check some grounds and spark plug gaps tomorrow and try and figure out what caused this to happen. Could be the coil as well from what I gather so I've got some trouble shooting to do. I just ordered a water pump for the blazer and new cap and rotor for the burban so I'll be staying home tomorrow to fix these things hopefully and with any luck things will go smooth and I can get the work truck fixed as week and than maybe I'll have time left over to go fishing after today!!

The spot on the left is just from my finger
https://blazerforum.com/forum/attach...ine=1437450207

And the inside of the cap
https://blazerforum.com/forum/attach...ine=1437450207

Wish me luck!
