Starting my very first build thread in my 1998 Chevy blazer. It’s got 20x,xxx miles. 4.3 auto 4x4.
Not exactly sure of trim package or what these wheels are but it’s tan cloth interior. Nothing fancy. It’s been a dandy rig for about a year now, but on the way to work the other day it started dropping oil pressure and smelling like burnt oil. Once I got to work I check oil level, it was normal. Brought it back home the next day and same thing. Had normal oil pressure but about 5 minutes from the house the pressure started dropping and it started smelling like burnt oil.
After some deliberation I’ve decided to pull the engine. I got some progress on it today, I’ll be pulling it straight out the front I hope. I’ll be doing a compression check before final pull out. I’d like to inspect the bottom end and pull the heads. If everything checks out I’ll put in a new oil pump and pickup. Also ofcourse all new gaskets, oil feed lines, and anything else I can find the upgrade. Here’s some progress: The view before she goes under Previous owner used an actual wood screw to keep the turn signal in lol Both middles broke... other than that it’s a perfect grill Quick pry and the clutch fan is on its way off! Here’s to the many oil leaks Pulling the battery try. May end up at the powder coat place Is this the 4x4 actuator? Utilizing a Jack helped catch coolant Slowly peeling her back Condenser out Is this a cooler or just a way to connect power steering pump and gear box How she sits now. Core support almost ready to come out I’ll be replacing these
i chose to pull the core support to give myself room and to pull the engine more forward and out, then fight it. Engine plans are gaskets, oil pump, small cam, updated injector. Open to suggestions. Over all well be also rebuilding the front end, and giving it a lift.
That was the 4x4 actuator, and that is a power steering cooler.
Nice progress so far!
Any big plans for it?
I really want to give everything a good update and use it to haul my kayak around or throw a roof top tent on. I’m located in missouri and there is hundreds of miles of mark twain trails to drive on and such. My inspiration
I didn't see it mentioned, but you'll also want to replace the timing chain while you have it apart.
Are you pulling the engine and transmission as a unit? Because that seems like an awful lot of work to remove the radiator support if you're pulling the engine by itself.

I don’t plan on pulling the transmission, just a service on it. A lot of stuff like battery tray, core support and stuff is going to be powder coated. This was a mail truck for most of its life, and surprisingly it’s not rusty. But the red dirt roads it’s drove has left it’s mark. All the dirt and dust is from that era of its life. Plus I went this route knowing that it was more work up front....but less struggle in the end. Yep! Time chain kit ofcourse also!
Got some more work done this morning before going to a cookout. Core support is out and started taking apart some of the top end. Just piddling around since I knew I was leaving soon and didn’t want to start something big. May try and do a compression test this evening if time and family allow it
Core support out! I’ve gotta to figure out a color scheme for this thing. My buddy’s dad does powder coating so I’ve got the hookup on that. Thinking about rhino lining the whole blazer desert tan.
