You can put pretty much any GM Small block V8 under the hood... except for maybe ones that are made for FWD vehicles.

Also i would think about a D.O.D. motor....
With enough time and money, you could put pretty much any engine in there... but SBC's are by far, the easiest...
And yeah, I'm waiting until the price of active fuel management engines comes down before I make the swap...

i've been told that a small block is pretty easy, what about a ls1 or ls6,, that would be nice
i'm lookin at liftin a blazer 9 inches with 35's so a ls1 may be in the future

A Duramax might be a little overkill in a Blazer... but a Cummins 4BT would work pretty well!
The biggest challenge with an LS based engine over say the 5.7L SCFI Vortec is the wiring & engine management. The 5.7L Vortec motor can be dropped in and with minimal wiring changes and a PCM flash to the v8 firmware, you're in business.
