Heater core?

So my windows(internal) won't stop fogging up every two minutes. I'm talking rediculously! I haven't noticed a wet passenger floor board, but i smell something a little funny(sometimes) when i turn on the heat. It sounds like a heater core problem to me, but im no expert by any means. So my question is this....

CAN THIS CAUSE FURTHER ENGINE/ANY PROBLEMS OTHER THAN THE ONES I HAVE LISTED HERE? COULD A BAD A/C CAUSE IT TO GO OUT/VICE VERSA, CAUSE THAT DOESN'T WORK EITHER.

I CAN'T FIX IT MYSELF, SO IF IT IS WHAT I THINK IT IS, ANYONE GOT AN IDEA OF ROUGHLY WHAT THIS WOULD COST TO GET FIXED?

Any ideas you got would be greatly appreciated.[:o]

RE: Heater core?

sorry to say but it definatly sounds like a heater core. Same thing happend to me on the highway going to work last summer. It's white fog that has to be wiped away with your hand......If your running dexcool (red stuff) it smells like rotten fish, very noticable. The green stuff is a little harder to explain........

I think my bill came up to like 850, thats for the whole schebang, delco core. But he's a friend of my dads so he charged me, i think $700 cash, canadian. I would get it fixed asap.

BUT! if you live in a warm climate and dont need heat, you can re-rout the system bypassing the core untill you can save cash and whatnot.....at least people have told me that.......I just got the replacement a few days later.

RE: Heater core?

something else that ive noticed upon more lookin is that the only selections on my ac/heater that works are the top vents and the dash. Even when its set to off it blows out the dash like its set on 4. So my buddy tells me it might be electrical. I dont know. Im going to take it to the shop tomorrow and have a mechanic take a look at her. I hope it's not the heater core. I can't afford it.

RE: Heater core?

entire dash comes out with a heater core replacement on 2nd gens anyway........I'd say 6-9 hours of labour depending on how good they are.....

RE: Heater core?

can anyone tell me how to bypass it? i dont have the funds to get it fixed right now. but soon. Until then i would like to have the thing turned off. is there a fuse i could pull, or do i need to get into the engine compartment?

RE: Heater core?

You need to get into the engine compartment to bypass the heater core.
There are 2 small rubber hoses that lead from the front of the engine (one on the front of the intake and the other from the water pump) to the passenger side firewall.
You would have to remove both hoses from the heater core (at the firewall) and put a piece of pipe inside the hoses to attatch them together.
This way the water will just circulate through the hose and not the heater core.
The most difficult part about this is getting a pipe the right size as one heater hose is 3/4" inside diameter and the other hose is 5/8" inside diameter.
If you try this bypass, check carefully for leaks at your connections when the engine is hot (under full pressure in the cooling system)

It's most likely "Dex-Cool" coolant sludge clogging theheating system, the mechanic should know that, it's a well known problem that GM ignores.

Dex-Cool was OEM coolant

Just google Dex-Cool and Blazer Heater Core
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...gs+heater+core

Oh yea, the crap also eats at gaskets [:@]

kyle has gone over this subject many times. with proper maintenance dex-cool is superior. its lazy ppl that dont take care of their cooling system that gives it a bad name.

I bought my 98 new, dealer maintenance schedule to the T, and it happened to me 9 months after purchase.

I don't care who said what, or how many times it was covered.

I sure as F*ck wasn't lazy about my maintenance scheduled, I Operate & Erect Tower & Mobile/TrackedCranes for a living with IUOE #18 for the 2nd largest Rental outfit in the world. I know a little something about maintenance.

Dex-Cool SUX, watch who you call lazy if you don't know the facts, it could be considered ignorant:D

RE: Heater core?

My buds '99 Blazer LS had a problem w/ Dexcool.
He kept the overfill bottle topped off and the fluid was alwaysup to the rad cap according to him.

It ate the core.

Before he took it in to get fixed, We hadthe engine warmed up, and Islowly turned the purge valve on the elbow above the T stat and out came alot of air. (then came out dexcool.)

I think the core had an air pocket and the coolant contributed to it's death.

Was Dexcool used for low maint/longetivity? Kind of like platinum spark plugs?

I don't know but according to a local shop grease monkey there was alot of guck in my core when I had it flushed last Feb.

It's up to you juscarter, if you want Dexcool or the regular sweet stuff put back in. Just purge it out if you can.

RE: Heater core?

Get the facts straight before spewing FUD. GM also has been known for weak connection points where the different sections of the core come together. Dexcool DOES NOT eat gaskets or metals, PERIOD. Any further discussion on the topic of Dexcool being harmful will be removed from this thread. There is a thread already started that lays out ALL of the facts as well as dispells most all of the FUD everyone and their brother has been brought to believe as fact. Had a bad experience with it, take it up in the Dexcool thread: WHO'S HAD GOOD LUCK WITH DEX-COOL. Read it all before you reply with 'ignorant' comments (to coin a phrase used earlier here).

Oh and to all of you new guys. Typing in all CAPS is frowned upon. Please do not do it.

OK, to get back on topic here, i took the blaze to the mechanic this morining. ( too cold to go w/out the friggin heater). Its gonna cost alot and it sucks. Ill flush the radiator myself, so whatever. Blazinloud, thanks for all the help bro. I appreciate it. I was actually gonna wait on this, and bypass the heater core, but like i said 32degrees with the windows down on the highway is not my idea of fun on a friday night. I'll let ya know how everything works out.
