Newby questions....350 to 383 conv.
Hi all. New to the site and new to blazers. Have a couple of questions: I have a 94 blazer with 5.7ltr 350 TBI. I just bought the thing a couple of months ago. The engine has 195000 miles on it. I want to put a stand alone 383 stroker in it(carburated), but Im not sure about using the tranny with this setup. Its the electronic tranny 4l60e. I have been told that I can use this, but there is something you have to do to the valve body, and need a different torque converter. Any Ideas??? Also, does the ecm control anything else besides the fuel injection and timing? Can I just remove the computer when I put this engine in??? Sorry about the long post, just trying to figure all of this out.
Thanks for any info
Thanks for any info
Actually, I want to do away with the computer. What im looking at is running a Turbo 400 behind the 383. Heres a question for you: Will any of my guages work on the dash if I do this? How will I run the speedo? Any info is appreciated. Engine will be here in about a month, so I need to figure all of this out.
Thanks
Thanks
Depending on how much hp, and tq you are planning on running I would not suggest the 700r4 they are not overly reliable for high hp, tq engines. The TH400 would probably work great although I would personally do a rebuild. As for your gauges, more than likely you are going to have to get some cables and go to work installing them, also check your instrument cluster. You may have to get new gauges overall for it to work. Are you building the 383 yourself? If so there are companies out there (can't remember the name now) that sell the crank, rod, piston etc etc packages so that you can turn your 350 into a 383, add in an engine rebuild and you might be able to save some money over a crate motor. Just remember though if you are building it, you will definitely have to custom tune it.
Just an update. The engine is being build right now. It will be here in a couple of weeks. Chev. 383, 460hp, 10.2-1 compression. I found a turbo 400 core with the NP 241 case attached, so now Ill have an extra transfercase. I bought a rebuild kit with all the goodies. Cadillac drum, Red Eagle racing clutches, Kolene high intensity steels, a Turbo Action shift kit, and a Dacco 8" 3500 stall converter with baloon plates. Bunch of goodies for a bulletproof 400. I will keep you all updated on progress.
the ecm also controlles the fuel pump. any why are you going to a 3 speed over 4 speed transmission. you must have good gas prices in your part of the world. if a 700 is built right it will handle 700 hp. mine is althought I had to go to a manual valve body. And I dont race it at a track. Only a few burn outs and quick accells. The 700r4 also has a way better take off gear than the 400. AND removing tbi? to carb? your going back in time. here is a new saying....THERE IS A REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT, ITS CALLED TECHNOLOGY....
