Default 1994 S10 Blazer 4.3 timing question

Hello All:

Let me introduce myself. I I am 60 years old and have been doing dyi repairs all my life. I bought a 94 S10 Blazer and i love it. I live in Canada in the province of Alberta, along the Rocky mountain foothills. .

I have a 1994 S10 blazer with the W engine.

I have been reading the forum trying to get ready to do my timing chain and lower intake gaskets. I am confused on the proper way to do it. Do I set #1 cyl on tdc and proceed or do I set #4 cyl on tdc?
I think the W engine needs a base timing set to zero with the tan wire disconnected.

Does anyone have a document on the proper way to set your timing chain and distributor up after a timing chain and distributor removal and replacement on a 1994 W engine?

your help is greatly appreciated.
thank you,
Ronnie_D

Well, here is my plan.

Set #1 cyl to TDC.
Mark the dist housing for position.
Mark the rotor for position.
Pull the dist.
Pull the intakes.
Pull the timing cover after removing necessary accessories.
Check balance shaft for proper timing mark alignment.
Lower oil pan to allow timing cover to fit back in.
Install timing chain set with timing marks meeting at the middle.
Install dist using position marks.
Install intakes and water pump.
Install accessories.
Unplug tan/black stripe timing connection at ecm area.
Set base timing with light to zero degrees.
Shut off engine.
Plug in tan/black stripe wire.
Check timing again to see where its at.

I hope this works. I have heard a lot of different ways to time this engine.
Feel free to chime in if you know a better solution.

cheers,

I would do the timing chain first.
1) Drain coolant, remove water pump, drop pan, etc. to get to timing chain.
2) Rotate engine by hand until two marks on timing gears are next to each other.
3) Remove old timing chain and install new one with marks aligned the same way.
4) Button up front of engine.

Then do the intake manifold.
1) Remove distributor cap.
2) Mark rotor tip position on distributor body with Sharpie.
3) Pull distributor.
4) Replace manifold gaskets.
5) Put distributor back in with rotor pointing to the mark you made. Obviously, don't turn the engine with the distributor out.
6) Double check timing with a timing light according to factory procedure.

It goes without saying that I left a bunch of steps out because you know more or less what you're doing.

That sounds like a solid plan, thank you. I appreciate your help.
