Anything from '96 thru mid-'02 should be a direct swap. You want to look for the presence of an EGR valve on the front/center of the engine as well as a screw in knock sensor on the back of the motor behind the driver side cylinder head as opposed to the bolt on type. If the knock sensor has 2 wires, you would need to drill & tap the block for 1/4" NPT to fit your current knock sensor.

As a suggestion though, I would try to find as new of a block as you can, provided you can do the drill/tap work on the back and swap the lower intake manifold over. The mid-'02+ engines have an upgraded fuel spider. Swap that over to your current lower intake manifold, drill/tap for your knock sensor, then install and enjoy your truck again!

thank you for the info, this will be my first engine swap so im sure ill have more ?,and i thank this site for all the right answers.i went to pull the radiator yesterday and i only had to undo 1 of the two oil lines from the radiator, the lower line was already off, the c clip that holds it in place was half in the lock position, explains all the oil on that side of the motor.
