Default 2000 Blazer 4WD 4.3L won't shift into 4th.

Reverse, 1st, 2nd and 3rd all work fine. Changed the filter and it seemed a little better at first but still have the problem. This is my first time actually posting to a car forum and not lurking. Please help!

Thanks,
Grant

Check engine light on?

The 4L60E trans in these trucks doesn't like old fluid from my experience and will cause the shift solenoids to go out. I had to two fail on my 04 and lost 1st and final drive... I replaced ALL of the solenoids on the valve body and the entire harness behind the trans pan. When I dropped the pan the fluid that came out was DARK brown... New fluid, filter, harness, and solenoids, the trans is going strong again approaching 200k miles.

Mine was actually throwing a code for the solenoid though, which is why I asked if your check engine light was on.

Will it try to go to 4th and freewheel? Or not even try to shift? Is the shifting you are doing automatic or are you shifting trans with shifter lever?

The CEL has been on since I bought it in March. Haven't read the codes yet. I also just changed the fluid and filter a week ago and it wasn't too old looking.

I think it is doing what you call free wheeling. I'm not sure. I don't know much about cars past oil changes n brakes but there's nothing I can't do or figure out. I've been driving it the 2 miles to work with it in 2. Now when I put it in D there's hardly any power.

What did the fluid you drained out look and smell like? What was in the bottom of the pan and magnet? Sounds like you have a burnt 3-4 clutch pack and 2-4 band failure.

Fluid was still clean and red didnt look or smell burnt. Wasn't low either. <5 qts came out. Magnet was pretty much maxed out in metal dust. No metal in the pan itself. It did take a lot of wiping out to clean the pan though. Old filter was kind of hard to blow through compared to the new one, but that was probably just he fluid that was in it.
