2000 ZR2 5 Speed transmission whining...
#1
Hello Everyone:
I want to thank this super informative site for helping me get my Blazer back to tip top shape.. I did not have wrench know-how before this site and I am in love with my Blazer now that I feel even I am competent at keeping the truck in shape. It is amazing how much you can actually do yourself on a Blazer...
My issue is whenever I am in gear, I hear the tranny whining. It pops out of first gear and shudders when I depress the clutch too long. I know I have to replace the tranny because it will be cheaper than a rebuild. But I am an unemployed student, and until I get around to having that kind of money, I wanted to make sure the trans has fluid. Is there any way to check the tranny has fluid in it? It may have leaked out, but is there no way to tell or add fluid? The whine has become more pronounced as of late, maybe some more fluid would extend the life until I could get a used tranny from a junkyard.
Thank you everyone for your help!

Slipping out of gear is likely caused by bad syncronizers. They wear out over time.
The shuddering when the clutch is pressed in too long sounds like the throw out bearing is going bad.
As far as the screeching noise.. That's not good. Could mean that a bearing is going out in the transmission. I would definitely suggest a drain and refill. You should find two plugs on the side of the transmission. One will be slightly higher than the other. The lower one is the drain while the upper is the fill. Pull the fill plug before the drain plug (you don't want to drain it out if you can't put it back in
). Reinstall after all of the fluid has come out. Refill through the fill port until the fluid dribbles a bit out. Reinstall the fill plug. Fluid is GM Syncromesh Fluid sold under PN 12345349 which seems to work out better for most people than the general off the shelf syncromesh fluid, but the choice is yours. You will need 2.2qts (2.0L) whatever you use.
The manual transmission used in your truck is the NV3500. The RPO for your transmission is M50. The NV3500 was also used in the fullsize trucks behind the 5.0L & 5.7L v8's, but could have had a different 1st gear which would make the RPO code MG5

thanks Kyle,
I had my brother's friend fill the trans and I immediately noticed a difference. The trans is smoother shifting and barely any whining. However, this is just a quick fix, since we both agree the tranny's got to go. Thanks for the code, I will use NV3500/M50 when referencing in the junkyard...
