2001 BLAZER in limp mode. Replaced both shift solenoids still doing the same thing

2001 Blazer. Change transmission fluid 3 weeks ago no flush. Went into limp mode only have 1st and 3rd gears
Replaced speed sensor did not help. Replace both shift solenoids still only have 1st and 3rd.

Scott Regier 01-28-2018 05:27 PM

By the way, no codes show up.

Transman304 01-28-2018 07:03 PM

What does it due when it try’s to go to second gear? Does it freewheel or not even attempt to go into second or fourth?

It high revs in first when I take off then when I let off the gas it shifts into what is probably 3rd gear. If I manually shift it into second gear while running second gear will not engage. When I'm running in what is probably 3rd gear and shifted to neutral and then back to drive I think fourth gear engages but when I step on the gas and goes back to 3rd.

Possibly have a broken band. Really need to have it scanned and watch on the data stream if 2nd and 4th are being commanded. If they are you can be pretty sure it is a mechanical failure. Not all that common on the 4l60E but it does happen. Good luck.

Scott Regier 01-28-2018 08:29 PM

I did have it scanned when it started happening and no codes came up. I can downshift into 2nd.

Scott Regier 01-28-2018 08:30 PM

Pep Boys told me tranny codes do not show on a computer scan???

Transman304 01-29-2018 05:43 AM

You will need to get it scanned with the proper OEM software that can monitor all the data live. Dealer or well equipped repair shop. Really the only way to diagnosis and not just start by replacing parts. Why did you change the fluid initially?

Scott Regier 01-29-2018 10:06 AM

I appreciate your responses. Changed the fluid because it was time. There was no burnt smell to it and the color was okay. I'm going to a mechanic today that was recommended by a friend. Hopefully he can run a diagnostic for freeBee. I wasn't randomly replacing parts really it just seemed like the logical progression.

A side question, I wonder how I ended up with a Blazer without overdrive. My brother and father both have S10's with overdrive. When I bought it I just didn't think about it. Why would Chevy do that instead of making all S10's with overdrive?

If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Transman304 01-29-2018 01:59 PM

You have a overdrive transmission. 4L60E -4 speeds-L longitude-60 series-E electronic controlled. Hope you get some answers.

S10's with overdrive have a circle around the D icon on the instrument cluster. And of course you can feel it go into overdrive and the RPMs drop.

Transman304 01-29-2018 08:20 PM

Ok bud, good luck with the repair of your blazer.

Took it to a great mechanic. No codes. Could not really say the problem. Took it to AAMCO today. Did not initially understand that I had replaced the solenoids. Mechanic drove it around was able to manually get it in all 4 gears. Wanted to keep it overnight to pull the pan and look around, probably at the electrical. It was working fine until I replaced 3 quarts of fluid without a flush so I really don't know about the validity of coincidence of changing the fluid culminating in an electrical malfunction. When I did change the solenoids by dropping the pan I did not touch any electrical other than for the solenoids.
Diagnosis = AAMCO guy said 95% new (rebuilt) transmission with labor for $3300. I can get a rebuilt for $670 with a 3 year guarantee. I think I will start there and seek out the labor.

Did you happen to do anything else on your truck the day you changed your fluid? Specifically anything with/around the throttle body? The trans uses inputs from the Throttle Position Sensor and if the TPS got damaged/shorted/etc it can put the truck into limp mode.

Scott Regier 02-01-2018 09:42 PM

No. Did not touch the throttle body.

is that a local place that is giving you a rebuilt tran NY for 670? Im still looking at my options. I was quoted 1800 for the whole job to rebuild and install and I need to find cheaper or else I'm likely to call it quits.

Scott Regier 02-03-2018 11:33 AM

I was quoted 3200 to 3900 for a rebuild. I don't think so!
if you Google got all auto parts you can read reviews. The ones from the BBB aren't all that good. But they do a lot of business so you're going to get some gripes no matter what.

I had the same issue with one a few years ago turned out to be a broken wire on the harness down to the tranny

Was the wire down to the transmission or inside the transmission harness? There were no OBD codes. Aamco offered to drop the pan for $280 to be applied to the $3267 if I need a new transmission. I guess it would be money well-spent if it was just a wire but I certainly would not pay parts and labor for their rebuilt transmission.

newguy 02-08-2018 07:06 AM

I would just get a rebuilt one or one from a junk yard and swap it myself. Not that hard just time consuming

The wire was down to the transmission on the left side of the engine....I wish I remembered more about the fix but it was a few years ago...A great guy on this site with the screen name Captain Hook help guide me to where it was broken

Left side as in driver side?
Regarding the swap from the junkyard... I don't own a shop, I don't I have a car lift, I don't have the tools and I would have to do it in the street.
