3.08 (GU4) now...3.42 Dorman ???
I have the 3.08 in my 98 4dr 4x4 Blazer...has 31x10.5x15 AT tires on it and its my daily driver. On Amazon I can get the Dorman 697-300 Ring and Pinion for $55 delivered. Incredible price...how much difference will i see with new gearing? Plan on doing some off road but mostly trails and dirt/mud....nothing serious. Should I switch? How difficult is this to do? Time involved?
Thnx!
Also; what does installing the "corvette servo" into my 4L60e actually do for/to the truck? Again; Should I? Difficulty? Time involved?

Ring and pinion swap on the rear isn't too bad. Raising the gear ratio will require a ring and pinion set, or a 3:42 differential, for the front as well. They need to be the same ratio in the front and back to operate 4 wheel drive without tearing itself apart.

Newguy,
Yes 3.73 would be nice but did you see the price I paid...looked at other sets and they ranged from $100 - 400. for right now this will get me out of the 3.08. For a bit until I decide which gearing I want for $55 bucks I will run in 2 wheel and see how it goes.

Do you know that the Carrier for the 3:08 is different for the 3:42.(series 2 vs 3 Carrier) You will be unable to just swap the ring & pinion gear on your carrier from a 3:08 to 3:42. Search carrier breaks for gear ratios. I just went throug this with installing a G80 Diff. in my 89 Jimmy and I was hoping to use my original 3:08 with the G80 but I had to purchase a thin gear set made for the series 3 carrier.

You can get a thick gear set made for the series 2 carrier. See the link below.
I did just the opposite I had to get a thin gear set 3:08 ratio for a series 3 case.
