My point was that there is a carrier for 3:08 and higher and a carrier case for 3:23 and lower and the standard gear sets require that you use the correct carrier. However, there are thin/thick gear sets that allow you to mix and match ring sets on different carriers. As far as the specific gear ratio to use, that is the OP decision. I did not want him to find out after the fact that he could not use the ring and gear set he just purchased because it was meant for a series 3 carrier.

It looks like what I ordered isnt going to work anyways...so its onward and upward...

If & when you change gear sets look on you tube for videos with regards to setting pinion depth and backlash. The best tip I saw was to sand the original pinion bearings to become a slip fit on the pinion gear while in the process of calculating the shim thickness needed for pinion depth without using the crush sleeve. Once you have the correct pinion depth install the correct shims, press on the bearing, install crush sleeve. You need to set pinion preload using an inch pound beam torque wrench. I used the following tool. Click here forPinion Setting Tool Diagram The tool takes patience to repeat readings but it will get the job done.
