Default 4l60e transmission problems

Got a question for your guys...Our friend was driving down the road today when all of a sudden he lost every gear in his trans. He has either a 99 or an 01 s10 blazer has a 4l60e trans in it. He said he was driving along and suddenly lost everything. Now when he turns the truck on he gets a funky clanging noise under the truck. We're not sure if it is the torque converter or the trans itself. His service 4x4 light has been coming on and going off for the last 2 days. If you guys have any ideas I could throw by him it'd be much appreciated!! He can't even put the truck in park.

Edit: is it possibly the transfer case also since it has neutraled out the trans?

I'm afraid this is one for the transmission shop.

There's something severely wrong, and if I were in your shoes I'd just take it to a tranny shop unless you have the proper tools and no how to work on it... Things'll be coming apart in order to diagnose what happened anyway so you might as well let a pro do it.
