Default 4WD problem

2004 Blazer.

When in drive, none of the 4wd buttons light up when pressed.

When in neutral, I can get the 4lo to work. When the 4hi button is pressed, everything flashes and it goes back to 2hi.

I can hear something being switched in the passengers side floor when I press 4hi, but 4hi never actually engages.

And sometimes if I press 4lo, it will engage and work, but none of the buttons are lit.

Any suggestions on where to start?

I ran a scan today. No codes came up.

Any ideas?

go to the tech section and check out the DIY 4wd no worky (or something like that) thread. in there u can find out how to diag the 4x4 but iirc the encoder motor might be crapping out as it goes from one extremedy to the other (misses 4hi). hope that helps!
