Question 4x4 problems!

Hey guys, im new here and I have a question. I have a 94 full size blazer that I have never put in 4x4. So i have been trying to put it in 4x4, but when I do it feels like the brakes get stuck. I know I have to put it in neutral and then engage the 4x4. Is this the correct way to do it, or is it normal for it to be that hard when it drives.
thanks!

Are the gear ratios the same in the front & rear axles? If they aren't, it won't move unless one of the axles is allowed to slip (ie on grass, gravel, mud, etc).

I have no idea :-(. All I know is that its a stock 94 blazer full size 5.7 350. I guess it does go into 4x4 nut it feels way to strained when I try to drive.
