700R4 Noise in Park
Hello all and thank you in advance for any insight I may get from this great source of info!
I have an '88 S10 Blazer that I have been rebuilding pretty much from hte ground up. I bought a donor that was an '89 with a realy bad body but a good interior and the auto trans that I wanted(700R4). When I bought my primary project it had no trans. and the case and driveshafts were laying in the back. I used the trans.,T-case,radiator, and driveshafts from my donor, did a trans. service, filled with new fluid. When I dropped the pan on the trans. before removing it I thought I was in good shape because there was only the usual "fuzz" on the magnet. No other metal or anything. I have finally got it fired up, it's up on jack stands, and I shifted into drive let my foot off the brake and yay! the rear wheels are spinning! I applied the brake put the shifter into the park position and I hear what I can only call a "ratcheting" sound for approx. 2 seconds. It's not a grinding, it sounds as if something in there is trying to engage and just having a hard time doing it. After the brief "ratcheting" sound the trans. is in park. I apologize for such a long post but I figured the more background I could give the better. Thanks again and have a good one!

Thanks for the quick replies! I'll get a mirror set up so I can watch BOTH rear wheels and let you know what I see. If they are both stopped and I still get the same sound is there anything else I can check? Maybe something that may need adjustment?
Check the shift linkage to make sure you are in park fully. I've had that when I went from a stock shifter to a B&M. Other than that, you really have to apply the brakes harder than expected when up in the air since you don't have vehicle weight helping stop the wheels at idle.
Thanks for the input, I was talking with a guy I work with and he said the same thing. My primary came with a 3" body lift so I had to extend my linkagefrom my donor. There is a good possibility that is my solution. I just got home from work and it's 18 deg. so I'm going to check that first thing tomorrow. I'll let you know what I find. Thanks again to all of you.
O.K. finally got the time to get back at it and it turns out everybody was right! The linkage was stopping the trans from fully engaging into park. I discovered my rear brakes were still a little weak, not being on the ground made it hard to tell. Anyway, got the linkage adjusted correctly, re-bled the brakes, got all 4 wheels on the ground and it's good as new! Thanks for all the help, hope to have build pics up soon, been rebuilding this for what feels like years!
