Default 89 s-10 blazer starting issues

This is pretty lengthy so bear with me.

89 s-10 blazer 4.3/automatic 142,xxx miles

The issue started as the vehicle dying whenever you came to a stop but it would start back. Checked and replaced a few vacuum hoses that were cracked and replaced the tbi base plate gasket.

The next day it died and would not start back. It would turn over, not start and at times backfire thru the tbi. My first thought was it had jumped time. Checked that out and it has not jumped time. Replaced dist cap and rotor. Spark plugs and wire appear to be in good condition.

Do not have a fuel pressure gauge so I pulled the lines off the TBI and it barely was spitting fuel. When you were cranking it over the injectors were just dripping fuel instead of a spray. Replaced the fuel filter, nothing changed. Replaced the fuel pump, still nothing. I did notice there was not much fuel in the fuel tank when I replaced the pump. This morning I put about 4 gallons in it and the injectors are spraying a mist when you crank the engine. But it still will not start. It is still backfiring thru the TBI.

I attempted to check the TPS with a digital voltmeter, I am getting no reading out of the TPS except when I first put the test leads to it then it goes away. No reading at all when you open and close the throttle. So now, I am comtemplating replacing the TPS.

I have thrown way too much money and time into this and am looking for ideas or suggestions at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check your ecm and your prom chip. The ecm is right under the heater core, the last blazer I had I replaced every sensor thinking it wasn't the ecm but in the end when I did replace it, it ran great. Also there's a vacuum 'cannister or resivour' on the fender, did you check that for any leaks?

The vacuum canister has been replaced within the last month so as far as I know it is good. How do I check the ECM and the prom chip?

Use a scanner. Most parts stores have them and usually are willing to let people use it in the parking lot. As for the prom chip, visual inspection as well as use the scanner. So which trim package do you have? Mine's a 1989 Sport.
