Default 96 Blazer transmission problems

Folks -

I've broken lots of stuff in my years, but, have never experienced a failure like this:

My 96 4X4 Blazer has about 25K on a remanufactured (Jasper) transmission. I left home a few mornings ago on a VERY cold day, after letting the truck warm up for about 20 minutes. I got about 1.5 miles from the house, and the transmission started slipping. Actually - it's more like the transmission was just GONE! I shifted between forward & reverse gears, no clunk, no feeling of the gears changing, no nothing. So - I suspect that I broke a line and lost fluid. Get out, nope, fluid's OK levels and not burnt.

Go home get my Accord, and on the way back from town about 3 hrs later, decided to check the truck - I get in, start it up, and it shifts just like it should! I park the Honda, drive my truck home and as I'm backing it in, the symptoms returned.

It seems as though the issue is hydraulic, but, I'm stumped - I'd appreciate any advice that folks are willing to offer.

Thanks!

Well.....I am no expert so take what I say with a grain of salt. Your symptoms indicate a couple possible/probable causes. First one and cheapest one is the filter. If your filter is clogged then it won't supply the pump with the needed volume of fluid. Second is a failing pump, but being a relatively young Jasper tranny I would be surprised if the pump was bad. Change the fluid and filter in your tranny and get back to us and let is know what is going on.

Another possibility is a stopped up cooler......but I would go with the filter first.

If the filter is clogged after 25k, theres a more serious problem afoot

Thanks for the replies so far - *IF* the issue is a clogged filter - I'm worried, unless somehow or another condensation froze and collected (it was below zero, windchill about -20) in the filter? The truck is driven infrequently -

Is there any OTHER component failure that might explain the symptoms? I plan to pull the pan and filter this weekend to see if there's any gunk in the pan - If there's anything else that might contribute, I'd like to check it out while I'm in there.

I seriously doubt your tranny filter is plugged, and even if it was plugged the only thing to plug it up is tranny parts. So if the filter is plugged that is the least of your porblems and it wont fix your problem.

Sounds more like your electrical connector either has water in it or has worked itself loose. Verify your tranny elecrical connector is clean and solidly connected. The connector is on teh passengers side, can't miss it.

All - thanks for taking the time to try to help me through this.

Hanr3 - would a loose electrical connector cause the vehicle to act as though "someone pushed in the clutch" while it was driving?

yes!

your tranny is controlled by the computer. If the tranny loses the signal it can do strange things.

Folks -

Thanks again for all the help and advice. I finally got around to pulling the transmission pan this weekend. Fluid was dark, and the magnet was covered by about 1/16" of fine wet fuzz - more like wet powder, the particles were too small to be considered "filings".

Anyway - I replaced the filter, put in new fluid + 1 qt of the thicker-than-STP Lucas treatment, and so far - the transmission SEEMS to be doing OK.

Situation: The tranny has about 30K miles (rebuilt Jasper unit) and a few weeks ago, I DID tow a heavy u-haul car trailer w/a dodge Neon for about 150 miles.

Question: Is the "fuzz" (I'm assuming friction disc material) normal wear, or have I toasted my transmission and need to rebuild it?

If I *DO* rebuild it - are there any recommendations for things to do "while I'm in there" to make it a bit stronger and more reliable? I found a kit that LOOKS like it'll have all the stuff I need (ebay Item # 370161430760 ) - but, should I replace the sun-shell too? How 'bout the pump? Torque COnverter? ????

Thanks again - y'all have been a great help thus far!
