96 blazer wen hot doesnot have first or over drive

Default 96 blazer wen hot doesnot have first or over drive
why is this happening andwhy if i manually shift it into first it works

I'd say more than likely that you have a shift solenoid that has gone bad. After a while it should throw a CEL. However, you might check your fluid and make sure it's full and doesn't smell burnt.
