ABS & ParkingBrake light problem????
Background: I've got an 01 Blazer 4x2 with 106k on it. Drives just fine, lights on the dash are on..
Problem: A few thousand miles back the abs and parking brake lights started turning on and off. They seem to turn on and off every 50-100 miles, the truck brakes just fine, had new brake put on about 10k ago. I'm not sure what could be causing this but I don't see a reason.. I've heard that 01's seem to have this problem alot and I've been told before that it's just a computer malfunction? Any input is greatly appreciated!! Side note: sorry if this has already been discussed, I searched for a thread on it and came up with nothing.. |
my girlfriends 01 jimmy does the same thing...talked to a mechanic and he said it needed a new abs module...havent tried it yet but thats what he said would fix it
|
We have a 2000+a 2001 and my 01 does the same thing, when the dash light's are lit
you will find the anti lock brake system does not work properly-but the brake system seem's to work just fine-just NO ABS! I do not know the cure-I believe there is a scanner for pulling the brake code(trouble code) though I've never done mine-I'm to cheap! LOL Put some black tape over the light's-hehehe. |
Good to know I'm not alone, wonder why it affects 01's?
Anyways, I thought it might have to do with the module but I dont really want to know what it's gonna cost haha. and yes, I've noticed that when the lights are lit and I hit the brakes real hard they kind of grind? cant really explain it. Edit: But thanks for the info! |
I just encountered this same problem in my 01 4x4 blazer, my emergency brake stopped working for me about a couple months ago. Recently I started getting the ABS and Emergency brake lights coming on at the same time. It might not be the same problem as discussed, plan on getting into the shop soon to get the codes scanned. How much do you think it will be to repair if it is the module?

I hear you, I'm really not trying to put a **** ton of money in my truck to fix a problem that really isn't too big of a problem if its going to be a lot of money. Going to the dealer ship around 1pm today to get the codes scanned and i'll find out from there what the problem is. Hoping its nothing expensive, was finally about to get some sub woofers in my truck but if this is an expensive fix I'm going to put them off again.
|
Sweet man let me know what they say!
|
Bad news, they said the ABS control unit needs to be replaced which i'm looking at spending $1,000 for part and installation. They said it doesn't need to be fixed right away, but I should get it fixed before next emissions which isn't for a good while though. Something like $250 for the emergency brake, I got a print out of the estimations.
|
That's no good... Maybe get a second opinion on it though.
|
What????? a thousands bucks! I hope we dont have the same problem then haha.Thank goodness Oklahoma doesn't have Inspections anymore! :)

I found out from my dad that the guy we know from the dealership said if I can find the part for cheaper he would do it for 2 hours of labor. I just found the part online, but I'm gonna look to see if I can find it any cheaper. The paperwork the guy at the dealership has it saying my blazer is 4x2 but its 4x4, is that going to make a difference in the part? Its the ABS Brake Control Module.
GM PART # 88982299 CATEGORY: All PACK QTY: 1 CORE CHARGE: $0.00 GM LIST: $1,052.68 OUR PRICE: $547.49 |
No, really should not impact the ABS control module.
You could have your ABS control module reconditioned. There was a thread a long while back where another member used a service to recondition the ABS control module. |
Oh alright, I found this with some googling http://www.modulemaster.com/en/index.php
They recondition the module apparently, I wonder what the shop would say about getting the module reconditioned as an option. |
Other than the fact that you would have to remove the ECBM and send it in to have it worked on... I am not sure if you can drive your truck while they have your ECBM (just the electronic portion of the ABS pump).
Looks like they can only do the 325 module and not the others. Hopefully that is what you have. |
You can still drive the truck without the module and the brakes won't be affected. I dont know about Blazers, but on some Chevys the speedometer gets a signal from the ABS module and may not work until the module is put back in, but I'm not sure if it effects Blazers. I'd be interested in seeing how much it cost to have it reconditioned since I'm pretty sure I;ve got the same problem with my Blazer.
|
Looks like $130 plus the ride.
|
Not bad considering it's a $540 part if one were to buy it new. I'm assuming it just as easily installed as it can be removed
|
Yeah its a large price difference, I'm kinda interested in that website where they repair it and mail it back to you. Wonder if anyone on the forum has tried it before.
|
Try a search on "modulemaster".

Whoa - deja-vu all over again. I also have an 01 with both the BRAKE and ABS lights on. I tried all the "cheap" solutions (1) cleaned front ABS sensors, (2) re-grounded the ground wire, (3) unplugged the battery for 1/2 hour to reset the error codes and voila ...... still have the problem!
Actually, both lights did go out after re-grounding. But they came back the next day. Like others, my brake system works fine - just not the ABS brakes. I have not pulled the sensor on the trans-axle. Is there an ABS sensor in that location? Would it do any good to clean it? Midas told me that I probably need a new wheel bearing. $45 to check the error code and $350 for the bearing plug labor. Ahhhhh, no thanks. Not yet, at least. Any other frugal suggestions? |
The VSS sensor on the back of the transfer case (4wd) or transmission (2wd) could be dirty, but it typically will cause the speedo to jump around a bit as well as affecting your ABS.
You can check the WSS at each front wheel with a multimeter set to the mV-AC scale. You should be seeing in excess of 250mV-AC across the sensor when the wheel is spun. 300-350mV-AC is the ideal state. Any less than 250mV-AC and it is going to trigger an ABS light. |
I'll add my name to the list of '01's having this problem!
The ABS light has been on along with the Parking Brake light. The parking brake light was actually off for about 15min yesterday, then came on again. As far as I can tell though, my parking brake is still working, the light just won't turn off. I'm going to try cleaning the ABS sensors. The old owner said he has replaced all the ball joints/wheel bearings and brakes in it, and when he did the brakes he never replaced the ABS components of the brakes (even though the new parts were provided with the kit he had). He just re-installed the old ones lol. I've had the ABS lock up on me once...not sure if anyone else had this problem. I pulled the ABS fuse (which in turn will keep the light on) to make sure it doesn't lock again. Anyone else had it lock up on them? If and when I get around to doing that, I'll let you know how I make out. |
I had the same problem last year... Have your Brake lines bled... for the brake light.. ABS you need new hubs with sensors.
|
Let me add my name to the 01s with both lights on. Mine came on right after I replaced my cvs and had the bearings off. Will getting it scanned tell me exactly whats setting off the lights?
|
I had mine scanned and no, it didn't tell me the problem, but it did tell me why my SES light is on.. malfunctioning air pump..
So there are 6-7 of us with 01's having this problems... I think I'll check into recalls.. |
Hah think I'm going to do that module master ABS EBCM repair for $130, definitely not going to shell out a grand to get a new one from the dealership. I've been putting it off but I don't want to put it off for too long.
|
I meant get a scan of the abs system from the dealership not just an obdII scan. Also would a bad sensor on the wheel bearing cause the abs light to come on and in turn eventually cause the e brake light to come on?
|
It should not cause the emergency brake light to come on.
|
I had my truck into the shop a few nights ago (my best friend is a GM mechanic).
We replaced the ABS module and the lights went off and everything was working great. Took it for a road test and the wheels locked up when I braked. We had to remove the fuse to the ABS for now until I can get new sensors, or at least clean my old ones. The last owner of my truck replaced all the rotors and never bothered to install the new sensors that came with the rotors. I'll let you know once I get them cleaned/replaced and see whether that fixed the problem. Like I said though, replacing the ABS module turned off both lights, so theyre obviously connected some how. I know it's bad news for most if this is the problem..since it's a 1500$ part if I'm not mistaken. Luckily my buddy knew someone at work who had some extra ones laying around and I got mine for free. |
So you replaced the module but your abs still didn't work? I am getting my abs system scaned today at noon. Hopefully I can get this figured out.
|
Wait, "emergency brake" light or "brake" light. Two different things... The emergency brake light is only to tell you that the emergency brake is active. The "brake" light is to tell you there is a problem with the braking system.

I just went out to take a picture of what lights were on and of course they are off right now. But the ones that are on are the yellow ABS light and the red light that has (I)(P) and brake underneath it. What does just the Brake light look like I looked and didn't see any other brake lights in the cluster.
|
2 Attachment(s)
The one with the "!" in it is the one meaning there is a braking problem. The one with the "P" in it is the parking/emergency brake light. Just wanted to get on the same page.
I have attached images of the cluster from the 2000 Blazer Owner's Manual below: |
Mine has ! and P in the same light.
|
Really... Hmmm...
|
I am uploading a pic of it right now. Is it going to show up on a scan if the light isn't on when I go in to the shop? It keeps coming on and going away.
