Question 1990 2.8L, 2/wd - dramatic loss of power when AC turned on

Hi guys,
First post but find very infomative. I have a 1990 S-10 Blazer, 6 cyl, 2.8L, 2WD. When I turn the AC on the engine really seems to struggle with a rough idle and noticeable loss of power with a corresponding drop in oil pressure via the guage (not mechanical). The AC does work and I know the compressor will draw quite a bit of power on such a small engine but is this maybe a sign that the compressor is going out and what can I do to troubleshoot? Thanks in advance.

Unhappy OK - no thoughts?

OK - as no replies, then this must be a lousy question or obvious to everyone. Thanks.

+2 to what TBB said.. You barely waited 5 hours...

Now, about your problem.. You mention power loss. Does having the A/C on affect power as you accelerate or while cruising along? If it does, you could have some fairly significant health issues with your engine that have sapped enough power to make the power draw by the a/c system more noticeable.

If the concern is mostly at idle only, then you may have a problem with the IAC (idle air control) valve that is supposed to maintain idle speed by adjusting the amount of air that gets fed to the engine. You could try cleaning the IAC valve. It bolts into the side of the throttle body.

If you haven't already done a tune up (plugs, wires, cap, & rotor at a minimum), I would do so now as well.

Thank you guys. Sorry for the impatience. Will do better from now on.

In regrards your comment, yes it seems to be more evident at low rpm's to idle. For an old 2.8 putt putt it still has a bit of spunk once rpm's up to >1500 with ac on or off (better off but too hot for much of that right now!!!!).

I'll check and clean the IAC first and go from there. Tune-up to come Monday. I will comment back on results. Again thanks and apologizes.
