Default Clueless Girl with a Multiple Misfire

My '01 Chevy Blazer 4.3L v6 is having a multiple misfire issue, it has 160,000 miles, it stalls out in reverse, and is driving rough and idling even worse than it drives, check engine light is flashing. My mechanic replaced spark plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor. We're not sure where to go from here, anyone have any thoughts?

Do you know what brand your mechanic used for those parts?

Is it a random misfire or cylinder specific? Has he done a fuel preesure and leakdown test?

could be a fuel issue. even bad gas, BP flooded our area with crappy gas last month and thats pretty much the symptom, alls we did was pump the gas out and refill it and send them on their way, but yeah lot of random misfire codes

Have they (the mechanic) read any codes from the PCM?
Could be an 02 sensor, catalytic converter, dirty MAF (mass air flow), IAT (intake air temp sensor) or as simple as a plugged up air filter.
Or a number of things... get the "mekanik" to scan the PCM before he/you replace things!

<edit> Sorry about the "mekanik" comment. But if they/he doesn't scan the PCM & check for codes or diagnose things before costing you probably about $500 with parts & labour... I'd move on & find another.

1.Pull of 1 wire at a time on each cyclinder till you find which one is missing. You can look at the sparkplugs from each cylinder thats missing if they are wet and fouled I would run a compression check and test for bad valves.
2 you have a clogged injector/s AND OR A FUEL SYSTEM PROBLEMS.
3 bad map sensor or tpi sensor.
4 clogged fuel filters.
5 As mentioned driving the vehicle with all those check engine codes isnt good and can do more damage to the engine.

This car has an awful history. I am pretty sure the previous owner did pretty much nothing to it ever, including scheduled maintenance. From all the tests we've done on it, it has always seemed like everything is wrong.

I did have the mechanic test to tell me the codes for the check engine light, but he didn't tell me what the results were, I know it came up with four codes, I believe he said that two of them were relating to the misfire, and the other two were temp and coolant.

The fuel pump was replaced in May, and, per suggestion from this forum, we just replaced the fuel filter. It is running much smoother now, but is still a bit rugged.

To be completely honest, most mechanic work on the vehicle has been done by my father, he's not a licensed mechanic, but went to trade school for it after high school. As I mentioned before, I live on a small island, and I have little to no faith in most of the mechanics here, they charge high prices for mediocre work, hence the fact that I posted on this site.

Thumbs down Our Jimmys are in the same boat

My 96 was the same way,I think the previous owners neglected anything that could have been and just drove the **** out of it till it died.It was still running had spun bearing and wouldnt shift out of 1st gear.I took a chance on it thinking I was getting a good deal.Ha ha he joke was on me.This jimmy turned out to be one of the most major projects I took on since I was 20 years younger than what I am now.1 and half later it sits still unfinished and half way completed. You know they say hind sight is 20-20 if I had it to do all over again noway. It would be someone elses headache not mine.Things is now I have so much time and $ invested its too late to turn back now so I might as well keep pluggin away on it till its finished and hope that when its done it will be all worth it in the long run.
