Unhappy Code 0154 & 1153 - '97 4.3 4x4

You guys were great in helping me with code 0785 - 3-2 solenoid. Thanks! Problem solved. Now I have more...

Getting codes P0154 and P1153, I know they are both O2 sensor related. Have read other posts on the forum here, but have some questions:

1. Repair shop told me these codes refer to sensor BEHIND cat. This seems to contradict what I am reading here - I understand that bank2 sensor1 is passenger side BEFORE cat.

2. Shop told me that behind cat is not really important - not to worry for around town driving. If I can NOT spend the $160 they want for it I'd like to postpone it. What do y'all think? Engine seems to run fine (a little rough from needing a tune-up is all)

3. If I must get it done - how hard is this? Several posts talk about only AC/Delco parts - okay. Others talk about using a torch to break free. Question is, is the sensor easily accessible? Do I need to do any other tests? Could it be faulty wiring and not a sensor? Truck is due for a tune-up (172k), should I do tune-up first or after O2 sensor replacement?

4. Tune-up - What else should I do for a tune-up besides replacing wires, rotor/cap, and plugs? Should I run some fuel system cleaner through? Should this go through BEFORE or AFTER tune-up? I gather that the days of adjusting timing are history with the new ECM computers and stuff. Is this correct?

Thanks for your help!

BTW - 4 inches of snow Tuesday/Wednesday (Sep30/Oct1) more forecast for weekend. I need this rig running quick! LOL

Default

P0154 - HO2S Insufficient Activity Bank 2 Sensor 1
P1153 - HO2S Insufficient Switching Bank 2 Sensor 1

This is not something that should be ignored. This sensor is the passenger side upstream sensor that is used for fuel delivery.

You should be able to get on it with a wrench. It is best to use a 6 point boxed end wrench if you have one. That'll reduce the chance of rounding off the old sensor. I would inspect the wiring first though.

If you know someone with a scanner that can see sensor data, it might help in the diagnosis as well.
