Default Cylinder Heads

I have a 1993 GMC Jimmy 4.3l Vortec CPI. How do I determine if an available cylinder head is compatible with my engine? I have seen some reasonable prices for re-manufactured heads but I don't know if they will work for me. The only ID I am aware of is the casting number of the heads. Are casting numbers a good and reliable method to determine compatibility? Is there another method if you don't know or just want to confirm what year engine they came from?

go by the casting number and casting date in the head to be on the safe side
