Default DIY Trans Linkage Replacement ??

Before I head out to the garage I thought I'd check here for any tips and tricks.

Truck is a '97 GMC Jimmy 4x4. Floor mount automatic shifter.

Since I got the truck the linkage was always "sticky" and the other day I had to use excessive force to get it from D to P and SNAP it broke.

I know on the trans it comes off the selector arm with a 15mm nut, and the adjuster bracket comes off the trans with a couple bolts, pull the cover off the bottom of the transfer case...

...but I've never messed with the other end of the cable inside the truck. Is it fairly easy? I assume it just unthreads from the selector shaft somehow and then pulls through a grommet somewhere?

I need to go find a replacement in the junkyard tomorrow.

not sure if anybody cares, but in case somebody searches this in the future I figured I'd update.

Removal and replacement was pretty easy.

I had to remove the cubby section of the center counsole, and remove the bolts which held down the shift selector cover from the cup holder pockets to access the cable attachment point. The cable has a simple ball style cable catch that just pops off from the selector shaft in the cab. It's retained in the selector housing by a plastic clip that has 2 flared edges that fits through a square opening, just squeeze the tabs to release it from it's hole. Beyond that, I slid the driver's seat all the way back, pulled off the plastic sill plate, and drivers kick panel plastic, so I could peel the carpet all the way back to see the cable routing. The grommet in the floor pries out easily, and that's pretty much it.

I found a replacement cable at the pull-your-own yard for $8, and had it back together the same day.

This was the information i was looking for. My cable is also broken. I can pull out of park, but i cant go back into park. I was manually putting the transmission in park. and i did a quick inspection and saw the grommet going through the side close to the drivers door and wondered how difficult it would be the change it out. So coming online here to find an answer i stumbled onto your post. seeing on how easy you say it was to change it out. i have confidence now that i can go to the junk yard and get a replacement. Thanks for your post.
