Default Engine Hesitation

Hi there, I have a check engine light on. I had it diagnosed, it is from the MAF sensor. Would that cause engine hesitation? I can press down the excelerator and nothing happens. Other times I can press it down, revs stay the same but it is slowly, very slowly excellerating.
Now, I want to try to clean the MAF sensor before changing it, consider I am 6 hours away from home and driving it like that for 6 hours will be hell. I might as well try that. Does anyone know how to do that? Is there anywhere I shouldn't touch on the sensor?

Any assistance with this would be great.

Thank you in advance.

It might help to know what you are driving and what the exact code was that you got. As for cleaning the MAF sensor, they sell cleaner for that at auto supply stores. Be extremely careful with the wires in the sensor, they are fragile and if broken you are SOL.

Oopps...sorry. I have a 1998 blazer LT 4.3, 4 door, 4x4

So in other words, I probably shouldn't try to clean the MAF sensor by myself. I was thinking of unplugging the battary for a bit to re-set the code. Maybe it will drive alright for a bit then. As for the actual code I am not sure, it said it was the mass airflow sensor tho.

The MAF might contribute to the issue, but there could be other causes. Start with the MAF cleaning, just be careful with the wires. Get a can of the 'MAF safe' cleaner at the auto supply and use it. If you have a soft toothbrush or a small hobby paintbrush you can very, very gently brush the wres while the cleaner is on them. Use a can of bottled air to blow it dry and see if it helps with the problem.
