i had a huge post typed up and then my stupid browser got dumb on me and lost it. so this one will be short and to the point.
can anyone else link this to engine surge.
SPARK ADVANCE i did a test today after driving with my map sensor unplugged for about a year to stop the surging, stumbling, ect. i figured i would give another go.
i have done everything anyone would suggest doing. sensors replaced, even valve body in a brand new tranny replaced (junior raptor), still did it.
i used an autotap to watch and as the Spark advance went up the surge got worse. 0 advance nothing, 0.4 advance still ok, 0.7 advance start to notice a surge. 1.1 advance surge is noticable. i ended test there. due to time. this was the only thing that changed and as it went up the surging increased.
one more thing. those of you with an autotap does your knock sensor always show 4.48 volts. i have replaced this sensor and both old and new show the same. really darb close to maxing out at 5 volts.
also rebuilt engine less than 10k on engine (30 over)and tranny. has only done this since all replaced.

Does the knock sensor read that voltage even if unplugged?

ok finally got to it. with the knock sensor removed voltage went to 5.04v. so that would mean the less volts the sensor puts out the more knock it detects. i orginally posted 4.48 volts its actually 4.84 volts

after some more testing i have got the surge to go away. i drove around without the MAF sensor plugged in. this seemed to clear everything up. the only problem that arose now is that i get a real bad misfire around 2200-3000 rpm possibly even higher. this was the very first issue i had along time ago. i am currently in testing with this. have to wait for parts to arrive. i think it may be a combination of the MAF and 02 sensors. leaning mixture out as the laod drops off.

Couple things come to mind.
False air- the map reads the amount of air entering the intake, if you ahve an air leak after the map-it wont add that in.
gas- what octane gas are you running. Try a tank of higher octane.

I think Tim meant MAF not MAP

i dug into the distributer today, i found the gear to be seriously warn, i put a new distributer in as the shaft had some play as well. havn't had a chance to drive around enough to see if it has fixed the problem. the short drive i did due seemed ok.
i will check for air leaks. it does appear to be running lean pulled plugs and they were looing lean, speed glazed and powdery looking,

well i have put on about 100 miles and so far not a single sputter. my distrbutor was bad. play in the shaft and a worn gear. the wrong information was going to computer before it made its own adjustments.
