Just changed trans filter, now I have no torque...

Ok, there's a little more back story than that. I changed my tranny this weekend and installed another one. after we got everything bolted up, we dropped the pan on the replacement one and had a hell of a time getting the filter seal out of the shaft. After we finally got it out, we couldn't get the new one pressed in. So we put it on the end of the filter and pushed it in the best we could. I am 90% sure we still didn't get it seated.
At any rate, we filled her up with fluid and took it on a test drive. It does into all the gears just fine. But there is no torque at all. It barely moves when I step on the gas.
So my question is would the filter not being engaged at the top cause loss of power and torque? Or is it more likely something wrong with the replacement tranny or torque converter?
I just don't know where to start. I am thinking about taking it to the auto shop to have them change the filter and let them mess with the seal. But i don't want to spend more money on that if the likely problem is the tranny we just put in.
Any advice?

If that seal isn't installed properly, the pump could be sucking air. You need to get that seal pressed in properly before installing the filter.

That's what I thought. I have tried everything to get the seal pressed in. I even had to buy a second one because I bent the first one trying to get it in. I even tried using a socket on the end to lightly tap it in but couldn't get it. I'm just going to have the shop try to change the filter and press it in
