Default NEED HELP> Is 96 tranny going to fit in 98?

I have a 98 blazer 4x4 automatic. I found a 96 tranny for cheap. Was wondering if it would fit. Junkyard told me that it wouldnt. Any one have experience with this one?

4 hours... Wow...

I would pass. Your 98 has a two piece main case. It also has a 6 bolt rear pattern at the back where the transfer case bolts on. The 96 has a single piece main case and has a square 4 bolt pattern at the back.

Everything 93+ is the 4L60E, but there have been changes throughout the years. You can use a newer transmission in an older vehicle, but unless you are in the appropriate year range, you cannot go backwards. 98 was one of the years where things changed.

As far as where to get a rebuild kit and if you should attempt it... You can get the kit at a lot of places online and at local retailers. However, I do not think this is something that should be attempted by a casual DIY'er. Automatic transmissions are very complex and one mistake... Lets just say that you will not know you made a mistake until you put it in the vehicle.

If you really want to see what goes into the rebuilding of an automatic transmission, you should get yourself the ATSG manual for the 4L60E. You should not need the update manual unless you want to see what changes have happened over the years.
