Can our trucks throw a code without the "check engine" light coming on?

And if the light for the CEL is out. I know someone on here bought a truck and there was no CEL on when he bought it. Turned out it was throwing codes left and right but the bulb had burned out lol.

If it's not a major problem or has anything to do with emissions then yes.
