Really low oil pressure
Ok, so I was sitting in traffic today on this 105 degree day and I had the air on, I hear the door dinger (not sure what its called) go off so I look down and the Check Gauges light was on, and i looked everything was fine, it was running a little hot, (a little over 210) but not really hot. So I put it in netural, reved it up to 2K and it cooled down and stayed down. Then I stopped and got gas, got in and started it up, and when I did it ticked like a time bomb for a second or two. I thought nothing of that, and drove away. Then the "Check Gauges" like came back on, Looked down again and the Oil Pressure gauge was on 0. So, I quickly killed it, came to a stop on the side of the road, and checked the oil, and it was fine. (I'm over due on a oil change, but it wasn't low.) So, I got back in it, started it up, (with the A/C off) and the oil pressure was a little lower then it usually is, but it had it.
What would cause this? A bad oil pressure sensor? I'm stumped... |

and when I mean really low, I mean really low.
and the No oil pressure picture. |
@idle it only requires 8psi....however u need to put a mechanical oil pressure gauge on it to see where it really is at!!! On the other hand if it was ticking away that isn't a good sign and indicates u have a severe problem on your hands...:icon_hunter::icon_look::):icon_emm:

I would do an oil change and check to see what comes out of it. My issue was on a Bronco but it started getting really low oil pressure. I did everything to see what it was, even had someone replace the oil pump. Problem persisted till i pulled the oil pan and found the pick up tube clogged. That was my issue.

I started it today to see about the oil pressure, this is what it was when cold. (keep in mind it's about 95 when i started it)
And when it was warmed up, with the air on. I don't get why it had really low Oil Pressure yesterday. I'm thinking it was just a bug in the pressure sensor. |
its hard to say. when hot, tolerances change, thus lower pressures.
Could be a bad oil pump (unlikely) ,bad bearings or bad sensor. What weight oil are you running? thing should use like5 or 10w30 right now. you could try adding some 20w50 etc to see if it helps,but...we cant tell ya whats wrong. too many variables. |

I believe I have 10w30 in it right now, I'm gonna try the 20w50 when I get the money for it.
never spend money without evidence on the issue, plain and simple! |

go to autozone or cadian tire, rent the pressure gauge test, remove sensor and check the reading when hot, dont forget engine RPMs will give you different readings, at idle 600-800 rpms the oil pressure reading when hot should be around 20 psi, least any jimmys ive worked on(work in a gm dealership) there usally around 20 psi, the ones who ahd **** maintance are like 15 psi.... but besides that i cant see the truck just randomly droping oil pressure unless the pressure releaf valve is sticking which is possable but unlikly, dont switch toa heavier oil until you test base oil pressure when its acting up... your wasting money.

I put a take out motor into my 98 S-10 SS from an express van (98K on it). When it runs hot running down the road it has about 30PSI. Idling in gear it's about 15PSI. I'm running 10W/30 with Lucas. I'm not happy with it myself, but it has been this way since the install in February. I rebuild pumps all the time (Automatic transmission rebuilder) and that one was removed, disassembled, clearance checked, blocked and reassembled. I do wish I had shimmed or put a heavier spring in the relief valve plunger. I cleaned the valve covers and oil pan out, checking the inside of the motor. Full sized van has different add bolt ons (valve covers, intake and oil pan had to be changed) from the S-10. I ran 5w/30 with Rislone to clean out the block for it's virgin run and changed it @ 1000 miles with 10w/30. I ran that for 2000 more, then tried 10w/30 with the Lucas. The only thing I can think is clearances must be on the large side of spec's inside of the motor. I have put 6,569 miles on it since the install. 20w/50 is my choice in oil for it's next oil change. It is what it is for oil pressure. The motor will live or die, but I'm going to do what I can to improve the oil pressure while it's still running.

I had the exact same problem, turns out I need an engine. I would check it with a mechanical gauge and go from there.
