Rebuild suggestions
I have a '95 2dr 4wd Blazer with the 4.3 Vortec engine. I bought it recently and found out that the coolant leak that I assumed was a hose is probably the freeze plugs on the back of the engine block. Since I have to drop the tranny or pull the engine to replace them, I figure I may as well do a little freshening up since it has 180k on the motor. Since I only paid $1400 for the car, I would like to be as economical as possible while maximizing the effort of pulling the engine. I plan on buying a re-ring kit which includes a full gasket set, main bearings, rod bearings, and piston rings. What suggestions do you have for what I should do while I am in this deep? Should the timing chain be replaced, etc.? The oil pressure seems to be pretty good, and the car seems to run pretty well with the exception of some issues that I believe to sensor related (intermittently surging idle, running which while cold when it hasn't been started for several days). Thanks for your input!
